Goals 2008-13 -- Objectives Revised for July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013

Goal 1: Enrich the experience of learners and scholars.

 

Objective 1.1: Define and implement a learning commons service model that is appropriate for JMU and which emphasizes learning and user-centered services.

 

Initiative 1.1.1: Develop a plan for including media research and production in the Carrier Library Learning Commons.

 

Initiative 1.1.2: Investigate and implement changes to library public computing to better support research needs of students, faculty, and staff.

 

Objective 1.2: Improve student learning by designing instructional programs and instructional content for students and faculty that promote information and technology literacy.

 

Initiative 1.2.1:  Improve access to subject guides. Initiative 1.2.2: Research Essentials & Research Toolkit

 

Objective 1.3: Strengthen the liaison program and other partnerships with the faculty by making adjustments in response to growth.

 

Initiative 1.3.1:  Identify and implement improvements to the library liaison program

 

Objective 1.4: Identify and partner with colleges and departments that want to explore and implement the development of blended or online distance academic programs, especially in the areas of Outreach and Engagement, graduate programs, and undergraduate programs with courses suitable for online distance instruction. 

Initiative 1.4.1: Provide educational opportunities to all academic unit heads about our recommended attributes of online course delivery (high level of engagement, academic rigor, etc.) Initiative 1.4.2: Integrate student-oriented information about online and blended learning into the CIT website Initiative 1.4.3: Evaluate effectiveness of Quality Matters Rubric in guiding development of online courses

 

Goal 2: Enhance virtual environments to empower learners and scholars.

 

Objective 2.1:  Implement tools and strategies to integrate and improve knowledge discovery and information retrieval. (Ongoing and Revised July, 2010)

 

Initiative 2.1.1: Create a single entry point for a broad search across JMU-owned and licensed books, articles, journals, and videos, for the user who is on her or his own using EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) and a locally-developed widget. Conduct a thorough evaluation of the use of EDS including search comparisons with existing tools, web traffic, and user study. Initiative 2.1.2: Develop a virtual space master plan that specifies a framework for how services, collections and functions in virtual spaces relate to one another and to the needs of our communities.

 

Objective 2.2: Engage in research and development projects that explore the feasibility of adopting new and emerging technologies. (Ongoing and Revised July 2010)

 

Initiative 2.2.1: Expand mobile access to library services and content. 

 

Initiative 2.2.2: Lead final phase of the RFP process for a learning management system and associated tools; plan implementation according to the final selection Initiative 2.2.3: Determine strategy for local Wordpress installation (e.g., offer self-service option) Initiative 2.2.4: Partner with the CFI and General Studies to lead next phase of online course evaluation initiative

 

Objective 2.3: Coordinate information technology systems, services, and support within and across Libraries & Educational Technologies.

 

Initiative 2.3.1: Facilitate technology projects and introduce new storage planning.

 

Goal 3:  Cultivate content in appropriate formats for learners and scholars.

Objective 3.1: Develop evaluation methods to assess collections for quality and appropriate formats using usage statistics and user feedback in order to align collection building strategies with curriculum needs.

 

Initiative 3.1.1: Expand e-book collections. Initiative 3.1.2: Investigate and select publishing platform for Electronic Theses & Dissertations (ETDs).

 

Goal 4: Develop physical environments, which reflect our mission by supporting learning, research, teaching and the work of our organization.

Objective 4.1:  Develop and implement an L&ET Master Space Plan.

 

Initiative 4.1.1: Continue Implementation of L&ET Master Space Plan
  • Deliverables: 1) Continue to implement short and medium term space plan recommendations. 2) Vision statement for Carrier addition and long term space plan.
  • Target Dates: Draft Vision Statement by January 2013; continue project implementations through July 2013.
  • Responsible Unit: Dean’s Council; Master Space Plan Steering Committee

 

Goal 5:  Be a planful and agile organization that embraces innovation while balancing priorities to serve learners and scholars.

 

Objective 5.1: Promote a culture of assessment and planning. Increase emphasis on user experiences and feedback in planning and decision-making. (Revised, July 2010)

 

Initiative 5.1.1:  Implement Balanced Scorecard.
  • Deliverables: Approve revised Strategy Map, establish measures for selected strategic objectives, and collect and analyze data, including conducting LibQUAL+ and Work-Life Satisfaction Surveys.
  • Target Date: July 1, 2013
  • Responsible Units: Dean’s Council, Management Council, and appropriate committees.

 

Objective 5.2: Develop internal communication processes that include all Libraries & Educational Technologies personnel. (Ongoing, July 2010)

 

Initiative 5.2.1: Implement a new L&ET intranet.
  • Deliverable: Introduce throughout L&ET 1) Lync as a new chat and videoconferencing tool and 2) SharePoint as the new L&ET Hub replacing existing, disparate systems.
  • Target Date: July 1, 2013
  • Responsible Unit: Digital Services

 

Objective 5.3: In line with JMU’s overall strategic focus on “green” practices, promote and integrate environmentally responsible practices.

 

Initiative 5.3.1:  Educate public and staff about recycling and sustainability through various outreach strategies.
  • Deliverables: Implement outreach strategies.
  • Target Dates: One major outreach effort each semester.
  • Responsible Unit: L&ET Environmental Stewardship Committee
