Finding Books
Find books, videos, government documents, e-books, streaming media, and more.
Subject headings in LEO can help you focus your search. Some subject headings on your topic are:
African Diaspora
Africa - Emigration and immigration
Blacks - History
Search the catalog for books and other materials held in libraries worldwide. Click on the Books icon on the library home page to find the link to WorldCat.
The following reference works can provide background information to help you get started with your research.
E-books (connect through their record in LEO):
Encyclopedia of the African Diaspora: Origins, Experiences, and Culture / Carole Boyce Davies, editor [electronic resource]
African American Almanac / Brigham Narins, editor [electronic resource]
Print resources (in the Carrier Library Reference room):
Africana: the Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience / editors, Kwame Anthony Appiah, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (5 vols.) Ref DT14.A37435 2005
Encyclopedia of Diasporas: Immigrant and Refugee Cultures Around the World / edited by Melvin Ember, Carol R. Ember, and Ian Skoggard (2 vols.) Ref JV.E53 2004
Oxford Encyclopedia of African Thought / F. Abiola Irele, Biodun Jeyifo, eds. Ref DT14.O97 2010
See the Africana Studies Guide for an extensive list of databases and more. Use the Resources by Type links on the left to navigate through the guide.
When searching in article databases, use the
icon to access to the article online or find out if JMU owns it in print or microform (if we own it in print or microform, you can request an electronic copy of the article through the Interlibrary Loan office).
Google Scholar searches the Internet for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research. Google Scholar won't give you comprehensive search results (it won't find everything on a topic) but it is a way to start your research.
CheckCite provides examples of citations from multiple style guides to help you format your citations.
RefWorks is citation management software that allows you to save your bibliography on a remote computer; it also helps you format the citations in your paper. Link to Refworks from the library home page or go to www.refworks.com.
