Information for Students

LIBRARY WEB
Access to library resources and services is integrated into one convenient system on the library website. The web address for the main library is : www.lib.jmu.edu/

LIBRARY HOURS
Visit the Locations & Hours page for current hours. Changes in library hours will be posted on the library web site.

FOOD AND DRINK
Drinks in covered containers and light snacks are permitted in JMU Libraries, with the following exceptions: No messy, hot or aromatic food (e.g., pizza, salads, takeout meals, fried food, soup), and no drinks or snacks in specific areas as posted. Alcoholic drinks and tobacco products are not permitted. JMU Libraries recycle.  Please deposit recyclables in appropriate receptacles.

CELL PHONE POLICY 
Upon entering Carrier Library, please shut off all cell phones or set to vibrate rather than ring. When answering or initiating a call, use is prohibited in all public areas of the library except the main lobby and enclosed stairwells.

NOISE POLICY 
Please observe the designated Quiet Zones (no talking areas) and Considerate Zones (conversation acceptable at a moderate level).

ONLINE CATALOG
Materials owned by the libraries are listed in LEO Library Catalog . You can access LEO through the library website.

CIRCULATION SERVICES
Books and government documents circulate for 3 weeks to undergraduates and 18 weeks to graduate students. Books may be renewed through LEO, in person, or by telephone at 568-6150. Overdue fines are $.25 per day per book.

LIBRARY CARD
Your JMU I.D. (JAC) is your library card.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN
Materials not owned by the library can usually be obtained through the interlibrary loan service. Place requests through the library website.

REFERENCE SERVICES
The reference area, located on the first floors of Carrier Library and East Campus Library, includes a large collection of materials (such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, directories and maps) which can be consulted in the building. Visit Ask a Librarian for all your research assistance options.

ELECTRONIC REFERENCE AREA
The electronic reference area on the first floor of Carrier Library and East Campus Library provides computers with access to the library website and the Internet including research databases covering all subject areas. A computer lab is also available in both of these libraries.

COURSE RESERVES
Materials placed on "reserve" by professors for either 2-hour, 2-day, or 7-day circulation are listed in LEO. Reserve materials may be checked out from the circulation desk on the first floor.

RESEARCH GUIDES
Guides to finding information in the library are available on numerous topics. They are located on racks in the reference area or under research guides on the library web.

MAPS
The library is a depository for maps from the U.S. Geological Survey. The map collection is on the second floor of Carrier Library.

LIBRARY INSTRUCTION
Basic information skills are taught in freshman general education courses. See the "Go for the Gold" modules on the library web. Librarians also teach how to find discipline-specific information in upper level and graduate courses.

SECURITY SYSTEM
The library collection is protected by an electronic security system.

JOURNALS & NEWSPAPERS
Check Periodical Locator to find out if the library owns a periodical. Current issues are located in the periodicals room on the first floor and online. Bound volumes of journals back to 1980 are located on the second floor. Pre-1980 bound journals are in storage; ask at the circulation desk to have a volume retrieved. Links to electronic journals are provided through Periodical Locator and many research databases.

MICROFORMS
The Microforms area is located on the 1st floor. The Microforms area contains microfilm, microfiche and ultrafiche copies of periodicals, journals, newspapers and stand alone collections of items listed in LEO Library Catalog. Reach us by phone at 568-6150.

GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS
The government documents collection includes selected official publications of Virginia and of the U.S. government. Documents are listed in LEO.

GROUP STUDY
Rooms for group study are located throughout Carrier Library and East Campus Library. Visit our Group Studies and Meeting Rooms page for more details.

COPYING AND PRINTING
Photocopiers, microform copiers, and printers are available for your use. JAC cards may be used for copying and printing. Costs: photocopies, 8.5 cents/copy for JAC or Dart Card, 15 cents/copy with coins; microform, 8.5 cents with JAC or Dart cards only; printers, 5 cents/copy with JAC or Dart cards only.

BROWSING COLLECTION
Carrier Library and East Campus Library provides a revolving collection of recreational reading on the first floor.

MEDIA RESOURCES
The media center in the basement of Carrier Library offers a collection of videotapes, DVDs, multimedia CDs, slides and other nonprint media formats. Audiovisual equipment for using this collection outside of the media center is provided by the media resources equipment loans service in Spotswood Hall basement. Laptops are available to faculty, staff, and students on a first come, first served basis in East Campus Library information desk on the first floor and Carrier Library at the Media Center Desk, Carrier Basement Rm 16.

MUSIC LIBRARY
Located in the basement of the Music Building, the Music Library provides specialized collections and services including recordings, scores, and a listening lab.
