Introduction

The purpose of this document is to help researchers locate reference-oriented information relating to communication sciences and disorders (speech-language pathology and audiology). It is a guide to selected Rose and Carrier Library reference titles and related resources found in the stacks and includes selected entries from Doody's Core Titles and related Essential Titles. Any INTERNET links refer back to resources found on the CSD library subject guide at /communication/ .

This document, which is updated annually, is an unannotated Internet version of the Medical Library Association's BibKit #1 on Communication Sciences and Disorders: An Annotated Bibliography and Guide to Reference Resources in the Field (Chicago: Medical Library Association, Inc., 1996).   Print copies of the original ed. are available at both Carrier Library and  Rose under the call number Ref RC423 .A52 1996.

For information exclusively about Internet resources, see the Communication Sciences and Disorders Internet Resources home page at the following address:  /communication/

LEO, Other Online Library Catalogs, and WorldCat

Online catalogs provide information about library holdings. Use LEO to access books, audio-visuals and other materials owned by various JMU libraries. This catalog can be searched by author, title, subject, call number or keyword. It can also be used to determine journal holdings (i.e., whether or not the Library subscribes to a journal, including information on what years we have). Do not use this catalog to locate titles of journal articles; use various periodical indexes &/or abstract databases, etc. for that. (Also note that some journal index/abstracts may also provide access to full-text articles).

Indexes and Abstracts

Indexes and abstracts provide access to the contents of periodicals/journals and other similar-type documents. At the least, they will contain citation information needed to locate a particular article. Many indexes/abstracts are available in both print and/or computer format, including Internet access. A few databases also provide full-texts of articles; however, watch years of coverage for the latter. SLP/A index/abstract coverage has been limited in the past. Also, you may need to use several databases to find what you need, due to the interdisciplinary nature of much SLP/A research.

INTERNET RESOURCES:   Journal Articles (Research Databases)

*** NOTE: Remember to check LEO, the online catalog for Carrier Library journal holdings. If the Library does not have the journal issue you need, you can always use interlibrary loan.
