Connect to JMU's Online Resources from Off-Campus

JMU students, faculty, and staff can access online journals and electronic resources from off-campus. However, you must set up your off-campus computer and devices to be recognized by these sites as a JMU user.

PLAN A: Pulse Secure (Preferred)

Quickstart Guide

Preferred method for off campus access

Try this one first.
  1. Download and install Pulse Secure from JMU Computing for Windows or use the Pulse Secure app for: Mac | iPad | Android
  2. Start Pulse Secure before opening your web browser to do library research.

Windows/Mac Instructions:

  1. Download the Pulse Secure installer for your Macintosh OR your version of Windows: 64-bit | 32-bit
  2. Locate the installer file on your computer and double-click on it to run the installer.
  3. Click Next. Then click Install. You may be prompted to enter your computer's administrator password before the program will install.
  4. Once the installer finishes, click Finish to close the installer and start up Pulse Secure.
  5. To finish setting up Pulse Secure, locate the icon in your taskbar, click on it and select Open Pulse Secure. Note, you may have to click on the white down-arrow that indicates there are more notifications. If you do not see the icon in your taskbar, start up the application by selecting it from the Windows Start Menu or Mac Applications folder.
  6. Click on the + sign next to Connections to open the Add Connection dialogue box. Note: The + icon may be in the lower left-hand corner on Macs.
  7. Give the connection a name (e.g. "JMU") in the Name text box. In the Server URL box, enter https://sslvpn.jmu.edu.
  8. Click Add to save the connection. You should see the new connection in the Pulse Secure box.

To Use Pulse Secure:

  1. Make sure Pulse Secure is running; you should see the icon in your taskbar.
  2. Click on the Pulse Secure icon in your taskbar and select Open Pulse Secure.
  3. You should see the connection that you created when you setup Pulse Secure. Click on the Connect button on the right side.
  4. If you see a box asking you to select a "Realm", select the Green option and then click Connect.
  5. Enter your eID and password in the dialogue box, then select Connect. You should now be connected to Pulse Secure!
  6. To stop using Pulse Secure, click on the Pulse Secure icon in your taskbar and select Open Pulse Secure, then click the Disconnect button next to your JMU connection. Click on the Close button to close Pulse Secure. Note that this will leave Pulse Secure running in the background, but it will not be connected to JMU's network. If you want to completely close out of Pulse Secure, click on the icon in the taskbar and select Exit.

To remove from Windows:

  1. Click on the Start button and choose Control Panel.
  2. Click the Uninstall a program link. If your Control Panel View By is not set to Category, you will need to click on the Programs and Features link instead.
  3. Find Pulse Secure in the list of programs and click to highlight it.
  4. Click on the Uninstall button to remove Pulse Secure.
  5. When prompted, click Yes to completely remove Pulse Secure and all of its components.

To remove from Mac:

  1. Open the Finder application, usually located on your Dock.
  2. Navigate to the Applications folder.
  3. Locate the Pulse Secure application and click on it to select it.
  4. Right-Click and select Move to Trash. You may be prompted to enter an administrator password.
  5. Click Yes if you wish to save the Pulse Secure settings, to make a future reinstall easier. Otherwise, click No.
  6. Click OK to confirm that Pulse Secure has been uninstalled.

iPad Instructions:

The Pulse Secure mobile app connects iOS and Android devices to JMU's SSL VPN service. This app is not officially supported by JMU Libraries or JMU IT. The following configuration information is provided for your convenience, should you choose to pursue this option on your own.

  1. Install the Pulse Secure app from the App Store.
  2. Tap Accept to accept the terms and conditions of use.
  3. Tap Enable on the following screen.
  4. The next screen you see will have two sections: VPN and Collaboration. In the VPN section tap the black arrow next to "not selected".
  5. In the new window, you'll see these fields:
    • Name - Name the VPN connection something useful, like JMU VPN.
    • URL - Enter https://sslvpn.jmu.edu.
    • Username - Enter your eID.
    • Authentication - This should be set to password.
    • Realm - Leave this blank.
    • Role- Leave this blank.
  6. Once the fields are filled out, tap Save.
  7. The JMU VPN will then be available in the VPN section.
  8. Tap the green Connect button, then log in with your eID and password.
  9. Tap the green Sign In button. Look for these indications that the VPN has successfully connected:
    • The green button in the VPN section of the app reads Disconnect.
    • There is a small, green checkmark in the VPN area.
    • A VPN badge appears in the iPad heading next to the wifi indicator (upper left corner of the device).

If all 3 indicators are displayed, you can minimize the app and use a web browser on the iPad to access library resources.

Recommended iPad browsers: Safari, Chrome, Firefox.

To sign out, open the Pulse Secure app again, then tap the Disconnect button to sign off. The next time you want to connect to the VPN, just open the app, tap Connect, and sign in with your eID and password. The other settings will be saved.

Android instructions:

The Pulse Secure mobile app connects iOS and Android devices to JMU's SSL VPN service. This app is not officially supported by JMU Libraries or JMU IT. The following configuration information is provided for your convenience, should you choose to pursue this option on your own.

  1. Install the Pulse Secure app from Google Play, or use this direct link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.pulsesecure.pulsesecure&hl=en .
  2. Tap Accept at the bottom of the page to accept the terms and conditions of use.
  3. In the VPN tab on the next screen, tap the Add Connection button.
  4. Fill out the fields on the New Connection screen. (Note: These fields may be in a different order depending on the type of Android device you are using.)
    • Connection Name - Name the VPN connection something useful, like JMU VPN.
    • URL - Enter https://sslvpn.jmu.edu.
    • Username - Enter your eID.
    • Authentication - This should be set to password.
    • Realm - Leave this blank.
    • Role- Leave this blank.
  5. Tap the Create Connection button.
  6. The JMU VPN should now appear under the Connections section. Tap the green Connect button.
  7. Enter your eID and password. Tap Sign In.
  8. On some Android devices, you may be notified that Pulse Secure is trying to create a VPN connection. Select the box next to "I trust this application," then tap OK. It is ok if you do not see this message on your device.
  9. The VPN should now be connected. Look for these indicators:
    • A Connected message appears in the Status bar in the app.
    • There is now a Disconnect button in the VPN tab.
    • A key icon may appear in the status bar of the device (may not be available on all Android devices).

If these indicators are displayed, you can minimize the app and use a web browser on the device to access the library resources.

Recommended Android browsers: Chrome or Firefox.

To sign out, open the app and tap Sign Out. The next time you want to connect to the VPN, just open the app, tap Connect, and sign in with your eID and password. The other settings will be saved.

Windows Surface instructions

Set Up:

  1. Swipe in from the right and tap Settings.
  2. Select Change PC settings, select Network, select Connections.
  3. Under VPN, select Add a VPN connection.
  4. Under VPN provider, select Juniper Networks Pulse Secure.
  5. Name your connection something appropriate (JMU VPN, maybe?).
  6. Under Server name or address, type in sslvpn.jmu.edu
  7. Select Save.

To connect:

  1. Swipe in from the right and select Settings.
  2. Select the wireless network icon.
  3. Select your VPN connection and choose Connect.
  4. Select your appropriate Realm and then touch Next.
  5. You will need to sign in as normal.

Some notes about being connected to the Pulse Secure VPN using a Windows Surface:

  • The desktop version of IE seems to work best on Surface.
  • If you access PDFs through Quick Search, they will not open in the EBSCO application meant for this. Instead, you will be given a choice to Open or Save the PDF.

When you can't use Pulse Secure

  • Make a one-time change to the Chrome web browser settings that will also authenticate you from off-campus.
  • After changing your web browser settings, you will use the Internet as usual until when you reach a subscription site. At that point, your web browser will prompt you to log in with your eID and password.

  1. Copy this URL using Edit, Copy (or Command C). It is very important to get this URL exactly right, with no extra space at the end or beginning:

  2. Open Chrome.
  3. Type chrome://settings into the address bar
  4. Click on the Show advanced settings. . . link at the bottom of the page.
  5. Look for the Network section half way down the page, then click the Change Proxy Settings button.
  6. A new Internet Properties window will appear. Click on the Connections tab in the Internet Properties window.
  7. Click on the LAN Settings button.
  8. In the LAN Settings window, uncheck Automatically detect settings.
  9. Click the checkbox beside Use automatic configuration script.
  10. Click in the Address textbox and paste the URL http://www.lib.jmu.edu/proxy/jmuproxy.pac (Edit, Paste, or Command V).
  11. Click OK. You should return to the Connections tab.
  12. Click OK at the bottom of the Internet Properties window.
  13. Close all Chrome windows, and restart Chrome.

Configuration for Chrome 23.x (Mac)

  2. Open Chrome.
  3. On the Chrome menu bar, click on Chrome, and select Preferences.
  4. Click on the Settings link in the left hand column on the page.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Show advanced settings. . .
  6. Look for the Network section half way down the page, then click the Change Proxy Settings button.
  7. A new Select Protocol window will appear. Choose Automatic Proxy Configuration.
  8. A text box will appear with a Proxy Configuration File heading. Copy and paste this URL string into the text box: http://www.lib.jmu.edu/proxy/jmuproxy.pac
  9. Click OK. The proxy window will close automatically.
  10. Click Apply in the Network window and close this window.
  11. Close all Chrome windows and restart Chrome.

Signing out

The first time you click a link that accesses a restricted resource you will be presented with a log in request from the JMU Proxy server. Enter your JMU eID and password. This login will stay in effect until you close the browser window or shut down your computer. If you share your computer with others, it is important that you close your browser before leaving the computer, just as you would with email.

To stop using the proxy: You may stop using the proxy server at any time by undoing the configuration steps and then closing and reopening your browser. For most browsers, deleting the proxy address that you inserted during configuration is optional.

Final Notes on Using the Proxy Server

  • You will not see any difference in using your browser when you click on most links.
  • You will be able to access almost any resource listed on the JMU Libraries' research resources pages.
  • You may be prompted for your JMU eID and password at sites containing free content. The Washington Post and ZDNet are two common examples. You may choose to either log in or ignore the prompt.
  • A few of the databases require some other form of verification other than the JMU proxy server. Accessing them may generate a separate request for your JMU eID. Examples include the databases Factiva and Mintel Oxygen.
  • Canvas users: Off-campus users who would like to access the libraries' subscription resources through Canvas must still set up their browser to use the proxy server. Examples include links to full text articles within databases as well as links to databases for searching. Even if you've already logged into Canvas, you will still be prompted for your JMU eID when connecting to a subscription resource.
