Also discusses the cognitive stage that Jean Piaget called capable of moral reasoning. The program explores Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of moral reasoning and considers the criticisms of this theory. Building Academic Background Knowledge (DVD)

(ASCD DVD, 2005) Three 30-minute programs on one DVD and a comprehensive Facilitator's Guide.

Here's a DVD that helps teachers and other audiences understand what to do about students who are ill-prepared for classroom learning. Based on the best-selling ASCD book, Building Background Knowledge for Academic Achievement: Research on What Works in Schools, this series of three programs on DVD, introduces your school to research-based strategies for overcoming the deficiencies that hamper the achievement of so many students.

Research expert Robert J. Marzano explains the importance of building background knowledge for all learners, especially for low-achieving students who tend not to have been exposed to the kinds of experiences necessary for academic success.

The Developing Person
JMU Media Resources Videotape no.9229

Publisher Fountain Valley, Calif. : Coastline Community College, c2003

1 VHS ( 28 min.)
This lesson introduces students to the scientific study of human development. From John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau through Jean Piaget and Erik Erikson, scholars have considered the impact that nature and nurture have on human development. The video lesson discusses the contexts and influences in which humans develop, focusing on Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological model of development. The lesson explores some of the major theories from the study of psychology such as psychoanalytic theory, learning theory, behaviorism, and cognitive theory. The final segment introduces the life-span perspective, which considers that development occurs throughout the life span and not just in childhood. Several theories have emerged from this perspective, including the notion of gains and losses occurring throughout a person's lifetime and the changing nature of social interaction as explained by socioemotional selectivity theory.

Learning in Context: Probing the Theories of Piaget and Vygotsky

JMU Media Resources   DVD 1352

Princeton, N.J. : Films for the Humanities & Sciences, c2003

1 videodisc (31 min.)  Note(s) DVD

Series Cognitive development

"Presents recent work by developmental psychologists that emphasizes the influence of contextual factors in learning and performance. Three sets of experiments involving children are examined: tasks in which deliberately gender-biased instructions are provided; tasks requiring cooperation between asymmetrical pairs of peers; and tasks involving training of students by adults and by peers. The intriguing results of these tests shed light on the impact of stereotyping on performance; the effects of self-perception on competence; and the influence of different teaching approaches on learning. Implications for adults are considered as well"--Container

Vygotsky's Developmental Theory: An Introduction

JMU Media Resources   Videotape no.7869

San Luis Obispo, CA : Davidson Films, c1994

1 videocassette (27 min)

Giants of psychology presents Lev Vygotsky's early childhood learning theories and demonstrates them in classrooms. Focuses on the centrality of social context to development in Vygotsky's thought and argues that it is misleading to evaluate children only on what they accomplish independently. Illustrates four basic concepts from Vygotsky's work: children construct knowledge, learning can lead to development, development cannot be separated from its social context, and language plays a central role in mental development.
