How Do I Choose a Database for Articles?

You Need:

Any kind of article on your topic.

Look here:

Academic Search Complete

WilsonWeb OmniFile

What you'll find:

These are databases that provide access to articles and are *not* dedicated to a specific discipline. Here you will find a mix of scholarly journal articles, magazines and newspaper articles on a wide variety of topics.

Hint:  If you are totally new to a topic jumping into a database to look for articles might be premature.  Consider looking at a subject-specific encyclopedia to help you gather background information or clarify your topic.  Look here for information about finding encyclopedias.

You need:

Scholarly, peer-reviewed, journal articles on your topic.

Need help figuring out what these are? Look here.

Database dedicated to a specific subject

How you do it:

Limit your search to Peer Reviewed or scholarly publications.

Hint:  How do I know if an article is from a scholarly source?  Look up your Journal in Periodical Locator and click on the link  Title Details from Ulrichs Web.  You can also, just look the Journal title up in Ulrich's directly.

You need:

Articles about a recent event

Look here:

Access World News

Dow Jones Factiva

LexisNexis Academic

What you will get:

Articles written to inform a general audience.

If your topic is controversial, consider looking at these sources as well.

Hint: Want to search a specific newspaper?  Look up the name of the newspaper in Periodical Locator and follow the links to the database that covers it.  Once in the appropriate database, limit your search by Source or Publication title.
