            This is a useful guide to federal government documents. It is arranged by agency and can be used to determine what an agency publishes.

            Good, Rebecca.  Finding Your People in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia: a Genealogical Guide. 3rd ed. 1993. (Ref F 232 S5 E242 1993).

        This guide is very useful to local history in the Shenandoah Valley. It is arranged by county. For Rockingham County it notes holdings information for the Clerk’s office, the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society, and other libraries in this county.

            A standard text that discusses the several areas of public history.

 

Miller, Gordon W. Rockingham: An Annotated Bibliography of a Virginia County. 1989. (Ref F 232 R7 M5486 1989).

            This is the standard historical bibliography of Rockingham County. Comprehensive in its coverage. Supplement online at /rockbib/index.htm.

 

Szucs, Loretto D.  The Source:  A Guidebook of American Genealogy.  Rev. ed.  Salt Lake City:  Ancestry, 1997.  (Ref CS 49 .S65 1997)

            Although written for genealogy research, this provides an excellent introduction to the sources often used by public historians.

 

Virginia Historical Index. 2 vol. in 4. 1965 reprint of the 1934 ed.  (Ref F 221 S93 1965).

            Although published in the 1930's this is the standard historical index to Virginia's history. Comprehensive. Most of the sources are available in Carrier Library.

 

Writings on American History. annual. 1902-1961. (Ref E 178 L331).

            This index offers comprehensive indexing for the years covered. A cumulative index for 1902-1940 is available. Not published 1904, 1905, 1941-1947.

 

B. Histories and General Sources

                   

            American Association for State and Local History. [Technical Leaflets]. monthly. (AM 5 A53).

                            The AASLH publishes a monthly series of  "Technical Leaflets" on a variety of subjects  of interest to local history, museums, and public history.  The Library has cataloged some of these at the noted call number. Additionally, quarterly issues of the periodical History News contain an insert of this title. These have high value in public history research.

            Fire Insurance Maps from the Sanborn Map Company Archives. Virginia: Late 19th Century to 1989. 1991. (Microform Area. Microfilm #1168-1178).

                               This source has maps from Virginia cities. They are useful in determining historically the arrangement, and property values, within the cities. For bibliographical coverage of available Sanborn maps nationwide check the book Fire Insurance Maps in the Library of Congress: Plans of North American Cities and Towns Produced by the Sanborn Map Company…. located @ Gov Doc LC 5.2:F51.

            See the Rockingham County bibliography (for a section on census sources available in Rockingham County libraries. The author's handout entitled History - Census and Demography has additional sources.  Some Rockingham County census microfilm records are available at Eastern Mennonite University and Rockingham Public Library. Carrier Library has decennial census indexes on CD-ROM's from 1790 - 1880 and a census covering the Colonial era in American history.

 

             Agricultural and Manufacturing Census for Fifteen States for the Years 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880. State of Virginia. (Microform Area. Microfilm #1057-1064).

                        These census files have comprehensive statistical data for the four census periods they were taken. Not all Virginia counties are contained for  some years. Rockingham County is available for all of these census's.

P.        Archival/Manuscript Sources

 

                Libraries noted above under "Library Catalogs" will have archival and manuscript sources. Carrier Library has a special collections area of archival and manuscript collections. Many of JMU's archival holdings are located here. The manuscript holdings are generally from Rockingham and surrounding counties. These holdings include oral history tapes and transcriptions. Access to Special Collections holdings is through LEO or the Special Collections web page ( /special/index.html).  Generally Special Collections are open less hours than the main part of a library. Special Collections in Carrier Library is generally open only during the day on Tuesday and Wednesday. Check at the reference desk at other times for assistance.
