Guides/Bibliographies

Carrier Library has a large number of guides and bibliographies having Southern historical themes. The Bibliographic Index is useful because of continual updating. The bibliography by Brown is especially useful for recent research. Several bibliographies of state history are listed here. They are to suggest the possibilities of bibliographies having less than regional emphasis.

Arksey, Laura. American Diaries: an Annotated Bibliography of Published American Diaries and Journals. Detroit: Gale Research, 1983-1987. 2 vol.
(Ref CT 214 A73 1983).
Arksey's bibliography is the best current source to diary information. The geographic index includes information by regions.

Beers, Henry P. Bibliographies in American History, 1942-1978: Guide to Materials for Research. Woodbridge, Conn.: Research Publications, 1982. 2 vol.
(Ref E 178 B39 1982).
Almost 12,000 bibliographies of bibliographies are listed. A section is included by states. A 1942 edition is also available at the same call number.

This lists where you can find bibliographies on your topic. Semi-annual with annual cumulations. Useful for its continual updating.

Over 8900 citations to articles published between 1974-1984 are listed. Has both chronological and topical sections. Comprehensive for the time covered.

(Media Resources).
The LAC is a series of ca. 20,000 American civilization book titles generally published prior to World War I. They are on ultrafiche (a highly reduced microfiche). Book catalogs of the series' holdings are available at the reference desk and in the Microform Area.

Exhaustive coverage for the years covered. The arrangement includes regional coverage. Books and journal articles. A cumulative index for 1902-1940 is available. This bibliography was not published from 1941-1947.


Dictionaries/Encyclopedias

The encyclopedias listed here offer excellent coverage of Southern history and culture. They also provide current scholarship on this region.

Boles, John B., ed. A Companion to the American South. Malden, Mass.: Blackwell Publishers, 2002.
(Ref F 208.2 C66 2002).
This companion is arranged in categories of The Colonial South, The Antebellum South, Civil War and Reconstruction, The New South, and The Modern South. In each category a number of essays are presented on the time period. This scholarly work includes bibliographies.

The Encyclopedia of Southern Culture. Chapel Hill, N.C.: University of North Carolina, 1989. (Ref F 209 E53 1989).
A major reference work arranged by broad subjects, e.g. history and manners, folklike, religion, etc. The individual entries include brief bibliographies.

The Encyclopedia of Southern History. Baton Rouge, La.: Louisiana State University, 1979.
(Ref F 207.7 E52).
Outstanding collection that includes biographical sketches, maps, statistical tables, etc. The entries contain brief bibliographies.

Hill, Samuel S., ed. Encyclopedia of Religion in the South. [Macon, Ga.]: Mercer, 1984.

A major work with brief bibliographies for most entries. Alphabetical (subject) arrangement.

Volo, James M.Encyclopedia of the Antebellum South. Westport, Conn.: Greenwood Press, 2000.
(Ref F 213 V65 2000).
This work has brief entries, with bibliographies, arranged alphabetically. Illustrations, maps, and graphs enhance the encyclopedia. A "Chronology of the Antebellum Period" is appended.


Description and Travel

The bibliographies by Clark are comprehensive in their coverage.

Extensively annotated bibliography of over 1100 entries. Both American and foreign travelers works are cited. Coverage is 1865-1955. Books.

Extensively annotated bibliography of almost 1100 books covering the years 1527-1860. American and foreign travelers accounts are listed.

Mobil Travel Guide. Southeast. New York: Prentice-Hall. annual. (current year only available).
(Ref F 207.3 M6).
This guide is arranged by state and area within the state. Information on eating, lodging, tourist attractions, etc. is given.


Biographical Sources

There are additional (general) biographical sources. These include a number of "Who's Who" type publications. Check with a reference librarian for further assistance with biographical information.

American National Biography. New York: Oxford University, 1999. 24 vol.

The current standard biographical dictionary of deceased Americans. This source includes women and minorities.

Dictionary of American Biography. New York: Scribner, 1928- . 20 vol. + supplements.
(Ref E 176 D56).
Although now updated this source remains important for information on deceased Americans. Excellent biographical sketches along with bibliographies make this a good choice for individuals of note.

The National Cyclopedia of American Biography. Clifton, N.J.: J. T. White, 1893-1984. 63 vol.
(Ref E 176 N27).
An excellent historical biographical dictionary. An index volume is required since this is not arranged by alphabetical sequence. No bibliographies.

Who's Who in the South and Southwest. Chicago: Marquis Who's Who, 1950- . biennial.
(Ref F 208 W64).
Standard source for living Americans from the noted region.


Statistical Sources

The two sources published by the Bureau of the Census are necessary for Southern statistical coverage. A handout entitled "History - Census and Demography" is available at the Reference Desk for additional statistical possibilities.

Basic statistical information at the state level. Population, agricultural, and manufacturing statistics are featured. Arranged by state.

Johnson, Charles S. Statistical Atlas of Southern Counties: Listing and Analysis of Socio-economic Indices of 1104 Southern Counties. Chapel Hill, N.C.: University of North Carolina, 1941.
(HA 218 J6).
Arranged by state and county. The emphasis is on educational and economic analysis.

United States. Bureau of the Census. Historical Statistics of the United States, Colonial Times to 1970. bicentennial ed. Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1975. 2 vol.
(Ref HA 202 A385 1975).
Major compilation of statistics covering the total American experience. Many tables do not have a geographic breakdown. Use of the index is necessary to determine tables with Southern statistics.

United States. Bureau of the Census. Statistical Abstract of the United States. Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office. 1878- . annual.
(Ref HA 202 A35).
From 1878-1955 this is available in the Microform Area on microfiche. Bound volumes are available generally from 1928 to date. This is the single most important source on United States statistics. Many tables include state and/or regional statistics. Footnotes to the tables can lead the researcher to more complete information.


Atlases/Maps

In addition to the maps and atlases noted there is a separate handout available at the Reference Desk entitled "Historical Geography American & Virginian" which lists additional sources that include Southern areas. The Reference Area has U.S. topographical maps of the South at 1:250,000 and some at 1:24,000. There is also a topographical historical series, on microfilm, for the state of Virginia. Cumming, William P. The Southeast in Early Maps, with an Annotated Check List of Printed and Manuscript Regional Maps of Southeastern North America During the Colonial Period. Chapel Hill, N.C.: University of North Carolina, [1962].

A scholarly discussion of early Southern maps is followed by reproductions of sixty-seven maps of the period. Several indexes include a chronological listing of the available maps. Bibliography.

Frank, Andrew K. The Routledge Historical Atlas of the American South. New York: Routledge, 1999.
(Ref G 1281 S5 F7 1999).
This illustrated atlas is arranged chronologically. Maps are used to enhance the historical essays.

Morrison, Olin D. The American South; Historical Atlas. Athens, Ohio: E. M. Morrison, 1965. 3 vol. in 4.
(Ref G 1265 S324 M6 1965).
Contains highly detailed line-drawn maps. Volumes 1-2 are chronologically arranged. Many economic and social maps are included. The final volumes are arranged by state. All maps are indexed.

Paullin, Charles O. Atlas of the Historical Geography of the United States. Washington, D.C.: Published Jointly by Carnegie Institution of Washington and the American Geographical Society of New York, 1932.
(Ref G 3701 S1 P3).
The first scholarly American published atlas. Social, economic, political, etc. themes are addressed. An outstanding compilation.

United States. Library of Congress. Fire Insurance Maps in the Library of Congress: Plans of North American Cities and Towns Produced by the Sanborn Map Company.... Washington, D.C.: Library of Congress, 1981.
(Gov Doc LC5.2:F51).
Almost 10,000 maps are included. Arrangement is by state. For each city there is a list of map dates and number of sheets. Small communities are included. Coverage begins in the late 19th century.

United States. War Department. The Official Atlas of the Civil War. New York: T. Yoseloff, [1958] reprint of the atlas accompanying the Official Records...
(Ref G 1201 S5 U6).
Detailed maps of Civil War battles. Southern states are heavily represented, especially Virginia. This atlas was published with the War of the Rebellion series of official documents on the war.


Oral History

For the researcher with adequate time oral histories may have interest. Carrier Library has a number of bibliographic sources describing collections that include Southern individuals. The Federal Writer' Project (noted here) contains Southern oral histories that are available in the Library.

A directory to a major oral history research collection. The subject index contains a number of Southern individuals and themes.

A guide to a series of oral histories collected during the Depression entitled "The Federal Writers Project Collected Life Histories of Rural Southerners Which Describe the Changing South". The 220 microfiche are located in Media Resources.

Havlice, Patricia P. Oral History: a Reference Guide and Annotated Bibliography. Jefferson, N.C.: McFarland, 1985.
(Ref D 16.14 H38 1985).
This annotated bibliography includes a number of Southern oral histories. The material listed is published sources.

Smith, Allen. Directory of Oral History Collections. Phoenix: Oryx, 1988.
(Ref D 16.14 S54 1988).
Arranged by state and city the directory lists repositories with strong oral history collections. For each repository there are listings for collection coverage, finding aids, and the purpose of the collection.


Pictorial Works

Carrier Library has few pictorial works devoted exclusively to the South. The examples listed here generally contain all of the United States. Many books, and articles, on the South will include some pictures.

Illustrated history of the United States. Southern themes and pictures are included. Coverage is the earliest Colonial period through World War II. Bibliography.

The South Besieged. Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday, 1983. (The Image of War, 1861-1865; v.5).
(E 470 S76 1983).
Illustrated history of the South during the Civil War. Comprehensive in its coverage.

Time-Life Books. This Fabulous Century. New York: Time-Life Books, [1969-1970]. 8 vol.

Outstanding pictorial history covering the United States. Southern themes are included. Coverage is 1870 to 1970.


Historiography

The Boles and Link titles are examples of Southern historical writing. Kinnell is a recent bibliography of a wide range of historical materials including journal articles.

Arranged by topic, e.g. Southern Society and The Farmers' Revolt, the author has brief excerpts from primary and secondary sources. Coverage is from the Colonial period to the present.

Series of books on Southern mountain culture and history. Coverage is generally the Appalachian region. The emphasis is on customs and mores with examples on how their ancestors performed, e.g. iron foundries, making a log cabin, handling snakes in a religious service.

A History of the South. [Baton Rouge, La.]: Louisiana State University, 1949- .
(Each volume classified separately).
A major scholarly series on Southern history. Published in 10 volumes. This an essential tool in Southern historical research. Outstanding bibliographical essays accompany the material.

Dissertations

Use Dissertation Abstracts to locate American dissertations on Southern historical topics from 1861 to the present. Dissertations can be valuable in advanced research, especially for their extensive bibliographies and use of primary sources.


Directories

Both directories are valuable in determining libraries that have outstanding subject collections on a given research topic. Useful for the advanced scholar and/or the individual having time to work in depth.

Journals

The Journal of Southern History is the premier scholarly journal on Southern history.

Journal of American History. 1964- .
Each issue contains the column "Recent Scholarship" which is a bibliography of current published research in American history. One section is on the South. It includes new dissertations.
Journal of Southern History. 1935, 1937- .
One issue, annually, contains the column "Southern History in Periodicals: a Selective Bibliography." This is the outstanding source for current research on Southern history.

North Carolina Historical Review. 1924- .
Southern Exposure. 1973- .

Government Documents

Government Document indexes include information on all geographic areas of the country. This section contains indexes to both current documents and historical documents back to the beginnings of the United States. Since Carrier Library has been a Government Document depository since 1973 earlier documents may require interlibrary loan assistance.
