Virginiana

Compiled by: .Gordon W. Miller
Liaison Librarian for History, Philosophy and Religion, Political Science
April 2003

This Virginiana handout emphasizes various aspects of Virginia's history as seen by the compiler. There is no attempt to provide comprehensive coverage in any area of the handout. Some entries in Carrier Library have more than one edition. Usually only one edition is listed. Unless the only edition is on microfilm the print copy is given. There are a number of sources available on the Library of American Civilization (LAC) microfiche collection. This can be checked through LEO or the separate book catalog.

Electronic Text Sources

An ever expanding list of electronic text sources is available for Virginiana research. Examples of sites on the Internet include:

The Library of Virginia.
The Library of Virginia is a leader among state libraries in placing its collections online. In addition to its online catalog there are several online links that have historical interest. These include: 1) Digital Library Initiative. 2) Land Office Patents and Grants Project. 3) The Virginia Newspaper Project. 4) The Virginia Colonial Records Project (VCRP). This project begain in the 1950's in an attempt to recreate a documentary record for Virginia's Colonial history. Much of Virginia's records were destroyed by fire and war over the years. Researchers visited over 100 libraries and archives in Great Britain, Ireland, and France to locate documents having interest to Virginia. Over 960 reels of microfilm have been produced from their findings. This has been a project of the Library of Virginia, University of Virginia, Virginia Historical Society, and Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. The records are available at these four repositories. An "Electronic Index" is available here to determine available documents. A six-volume print guide to this collection entitled Survey Report and edited by the Virginia Colonial Records Project is available @ F 229 V82 1955. This Report lists individual "reports" and notes theikr major emphasis.

Virginia Historical Society.
The Society, located in Richmond, has an online catalog of printed and manuscript holdings. This library has one of the best collections of Virginiana available.
