Exhibit Opens in Special Collections Hallway, Carrier Library

“Observe Our Library: The Construction of Madison Memorial Library 1937 – 1939” is now on exhibit in the hallway outside of Special Collections, Carrier Library Room 205. The exhibit is open to the public, free of charge, and accessible during regular business hours.

“Observe Our Library,” as a precursor to the seventy-fifth anniversary of the library’s structure, showcases the construction of the first free-standing library on campus. Beginning with the expressed need for a new library structure by students in 1937, the exhibit traces the stages of funding, planning, and the construction of Madison Memorial Library completed in 1939.

The exhibit features historic photographs, newspaper articles, and ephemera including an invitation to the formal Dedication of the library held on December 12, 1939, a colored postcard of Madison Memorial Library, and printing plates of library spaces used in campus publications. Objects displayed in the exhibit are found in JMU Libraries’ Special Collections in addition to featured blueprints of the original library courtesy of JMU Facilities Management.
