New Exhibit! Dressing for Education: JMU Weathers the 30's and 40's

"Dressing for Education: JMU Weathers the 30's and 40's" runs until May 2010 in the historic lobby in the 1939 wing of Carrier Library. The display features photographs, yearbooks and ephemera from the library's Special Collections' JMU Historical Collection and period clothing from the School of Theatre and Dance's Historic Clothing Collection. The exhibition is based on a research project, "Dressing for Education the First Fifty Years: Highlights of the JMU Historic Clothing Collection 1908-1959," by JMU Theatre Professor Pamela Schuelke Johnson and Sabrina Claire Chapman, a member of the JMU Class of 2005.

East Campus Library Wins Architectural Award

On October 13, 2008 the American Insitutute of Architects, Potomac Valley Chapter awarded JMU's new East Campus Library with a Merit Award for architectural excellence. The award, one of just sixteen out of a group of seventy-nine entries, was presented at the AIA national headquarters in Washington, DC. The jury commented that "[the] concept of this campus library responding to the site and adjacent buildings was clearly expressed through the solid masonry portion, combined with contrasting and lightweight metal and glass elevation. The architectural skills of the designer were immediately apparent."

The Library was selected for the Merit Award by a jury of three from the AIA Charlotte, North Carolina chapter, chaired by Marley Carroll, FAIA.

Periodical Locator: New Options

With your next visit to Periodical Locator, look for two new features that help you get directly to an article:

Fill out a Check for Full Text @ JMU form. This option is great if you have a complete (or near-complete) citation.
Search for a DOI or PubMed ID Number. These numbers are provided by some databases and uniquely identify the item.

Lockers Now Available in Carrier Library

Carrier Library now offers 24 lockers for library patrons to use for temporary storage of materials. These self-service digital lockers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and cannot be reserved. The lockers are located in the telephone room adjacent to the main entrance of the library. (See Carrier Library Floor Plan.)

East Campus Library Now Open!

Books: East Campus Library's book, journal and media collection primarily supports research in science, technology and health sciences (LC call numbers Q-T). Other books from other JMU Libraries are readily available through the library delivery service.
Space: Visit unique East Campus Library spaces, including the "treehouse," the "nook," the "overlook," and the "commons" -- spaces that allow students and faculty to work, learn, and collaborate. East Campus Library doubles the amount of library study seats on campus. East Campus Library's 5th floor is dedicated to faculty services, housing a second location of the Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) and the Center for Faculty Innovation (CFI).
Coffee: East Campus Library's Java City cafe, located on the 1st floor, will be fully functional by August 25.
Community: All that's missing, is you! Come visit East Campus Library and learn more about services from JMU Libraries & Educational Technologies.

Carrier Library Home Page Gets a New Look

JMU Libraries is pleased to announce a redesign of the libraries' home page. Visit the redesigned home page at http://www.lib.jmu.edu.

Highlights include:

a wider, 3-column page layout that makes better use of space;
an improved list of services and help resources; and
clearer pathways to research tools, subject guides, and information types.

These modifications were based on site traffic analysis and input from faculty, staff, and students.

CISAT Library Now Closed

The CISAT Library in the Health & Human Services Building has permanently closed. All library services on the East Campus will now be administered through the new East Campus Library, which will open to the public in August 2008. Between now and August 11, Carrier Library and the Music Library will serve as the sole library service points on campus. Please call 568-2731 for any questions or if you have specialized needs related to East Campus Library Services.

Library Collections Moving in June

We are busy preparing for the new East Campus Library opening on August 11, and one big milestone is that all library materials will be moved between June 16 and July 3. Some materials will be moved to the East Campus Library and the collections remaining in Carrier Library will all be rearranged, so one way or another your favorite library materials will soon be in a new location.

As you can imagine it is a huge project to move every single item on the library shelves and at times during the move different areas of the stacks will be inaccessible. If you need something that is inaccessible just ask at the Carrier Library circulation desk and staff will retrieve items for next day pick up. If any instructor has a summer class that will need to use specific library materials after June 16 then he or she should please consider discussing the need ahead of time with library staff so we can make special arrangements as appropriate. We will do everything possible to minimize inconvenience during the move.

See the summary below for details on the collection moves and for information about the library delivery service, which will make access to the collections more convenient. Visit the library web site for updates throughout the summer.

On August 11 the East Campus Library will open for business and the collections will be accessible in person as well as through the delivery service.

New Search Widget Now Available

JMU Libraries has launched a new search widget that organizes basic searches in LEO, Periodical Locator, and the libraries' website.

The new search widget:

allows for fielded searching;
includes a course reserves search;
adds more information about the scope of each search; and
adds more information specific to each search tip.

Find the new search widget in the top-right corner of the Carrier Library home page.

New to the Library? Go for the Gold!

Go for the Gold, a web-based program, is a required program for introductory GenEd courses and is also a helpful tutorial for anyone new to JMU Libraries. It provides instruction on how to find and evaluate information and includes exercises that can be completed online and scored electronically.

New Library Update: October 1, 2007

Construction continues apace in the new East Campus Library. The project remains on schedule with a substantial completion date of March 20, 2008. The next few weeks of construction should see the following:

Finishing the steel roof on the curved section
Continued work on the east elevation paneled wall
Continued glass installation throughout the project
Elevator installation
Drywall on all floors
Painting in selected areas
Tile work in bathrooms
Chiller installation in IT machine room

Work also continues on planning for the new library:

Recruitment for the first of two new librarian positions for the new library will begin this week
A Libraries & Educational Technologies steering group has been formed to coordinate planning for new library programs and services
Collections issues are currently being addressed. Current issues of note are:
- Deciding the nature and scope of a new "browsing" (recreational reading) collection for the new library
- Completing weeding of the book collections
- Identifying materials in Carrier Library's reference collection that are candidates for duplication

New Library Delivery Service Launched

JMU Libraries now offers a delivery service between Carrier Library, CISAT Library, the Music Library, and the Educational Technologies Media Center in Memorial Hall. Any registered borrower may request that circulating books and media be delivered from one library location to another for check out. To request delivery of items, locate the item in LEO library catalog and choose . You will be prompted to log into My LEO with your campus or library ID and password and to choose a pickup location.

Faculty, staff, and graduate students may also request that articles in Carrier Library paper or microform journals be delivered to them. Most deliveries are processed within 24-48 hours. There are no deliveries on weekends. Articles will be delivered electronically whenever possible. There is no charge for electronically delivered articles.

CIT Launches Summer Podcast Series

Changes to "Work at Home" Licensing for Microsoft Office

Media Resources will discontinue software checkout July 2007.
JMU’s Campus Agreement with Microsoft Corporation permits faculty and staff to install Microsoft Office on a personally-owned computer. Previously, media for these installations could be obtained through Media Resources in Carrier Library.

Effective 7/1/2007, Microsoft Office media will no longer be available for checkout. This is due to changes in our licensing agreement with Microsoft. Instead, faculty and staff can purchase Work at Home media from the JMU Bookstore for approximately $5-$6.

Work at Home licensing is only available to JMU faculty and staff. If you elect to take advantage of Work at Home licensing, you will be required to sign a document indicating you agree that Office will only be used by you, and only for JMU-related work. If JMU’s Agreement with Microsoft expires, or your employment at JMU ends, you are required to remove the Office software from your personal computer.

Office 2007 for Windows
Office 2004 for Macintosh

The JMU Bookstore also sells fully-licensed copies Microsoft Office without Work at Home restrictions for approximately $90.
