The libraries have made this change to give JMU users priority use of the computers in the libraries. JMU users should make sure their official JMU e-ID and password are kept up to date in order to use the library computers. After using a workstation, don't forget to log out.

Guest researchers are welcome to use the library computers. Please check in at a service desk to obtain a temporary log in. During the academic semesters when the students are on campus, public workstation availability for guests cannot be guaranteed and time limits may apply.

The collection consists of 135 interviews of people who were living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia prior to the creation of the Shenandoah National Park. The Breeze
An archive of the JMU student newspaper The Breeze is now available online. The archive runs from 1922 to present with fully searchable PDF files.

JMU Yearbooks
The JMU yearbooks have been digitized and are available online. The collection of yearbooks range from 1910 to 2011. The first yearbook, The Schoolma'am, was consecutively published until 1961 when the official name was changed to Bluestone.

By acquiring a first edition of John Foxe's Acts and Monuments of these Latter and Perilous Days (commonly known as the Book of Martyrs), JMU is one of only a handful of institutions worldwide to own a copy of the 1563 tome.  The elite group includes the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC and Princeton University.

According to JMU's own Dr. Mark Rankin (one of the nations leading experts on the Book of Martyrs), “This book is invaluable as both a historical source of the period and as a literary text. Many documents preserved in this compilation are unavailable elsewhere.”  Dr. Rankin also emphasizes the significant role the Book of Martyrs played as it “shaped the English Protestant imagination more thoroughly than any other besides the English Bible.”

The book chronicles Protestant followers put to death during the reign of Queen Mary I, who ruled England from 1553-1558.

The JMU edition is estimated to be 90% complete with 46 of the original 61 woodcut illustrations.

(See Carrier Library Floor Plan.)

  • clearer pathways to research tools, subject guides, and information types.

The new search widget:

  • allows for fielded searching;
  • includes a course reserves search;
  • adds more information about the scope of each search; and
  • adds more information specific to each search tip.

Find the new search widget in the top-right corner of the Carrier Library home page.

Citing sources correctly is important for getting a good grade, giving credit to others, and even getting published.  The different rules, though, can be confusing. CheckCite was developed by JMU Libraries with assistance from General Education faculty.

Use CheckCite to get samples and tips for the most common citations in APA, MLA and Turabian styles. You'll find help if you are citing books, articles, websites, images, media or a person.  And, you'll find examples for papers as well as speeches.

Take a quick look today to see what Quick Reference has to offer.]]> Tue, 04 Sep 2007 14:07:00 GMT id697typeNEWS New Library Delivery Service Launched JMU Libraries now offers a delivery service between Carrier Library, CISAT Library, the Music Library, and the Educational Technologies Media Center in Memorial Hall.  Any registered borrower may request that circulating books and media be delivered from one library location to another for check out.  To request delivery of items, locate the item in LEO library catalog and choose Request Item button.  You will be prompted to log into My LEO with your campus or library ID and password and to choose a pickup location.

Faculty, staff, and graduate students may also request that articles in Carrier Library paper or microform journals be delivered to them.  Most deliveries are processed within 24-48 hours.  There are no deliveries on weekends.  Articles will be delivered electronically whenever possible.  There is no charge for electronically delivered articles.

Media Resources will discontinue software checkout July 2007.
JMU’s Campus Agreement with Microsoft Corporation permits faculty and staff to install Microsoft Office on a personally-owned computer. Previously, media for these installations could be obtained through Media Resources in Carrier Library.

Effective 7/1/2007, Microsoft Office media will no longer be available for checkout. This is due to changes in our licensing agreement with Microsoft. Instead, faculty and staff can purchase Work at Home media from the JMU Bookstore for approximately $5-$6.

Work at Home licensing is only available to JMU faculty and staff. If you elect to take advantage of Work at Home licensing, you will be required to sign a document indicating you agree that Office will only be used by you, and only for JMU-related work. If JMU’s Agreement with Microsoft expires, or your employment at JMU ends, you are required to remove the Office software from your personal computer.

Microsoft Office versions available:
Office 2003 for Windows
Office 2007 for Windows
Office 2004 for Macintosh

The JMU Bookstore also sells fully-licensed copies Microsoft Office without Work at Home restrictions for approximately $90.

The display features photographs, yearbooks and ephemera from the library's Special Collections' JMU Historical Collection and period clothing from the School of Theatre and Dance's Historic Clothing Collection. The exhibition is based on a research project, "Dressing for Education the First Fifty Years: Highlights of the JMU Historic Clothing Collection 1908-1959," by JMU theater Professor Pamela Schuelke Johnson and Sabrina Claire Chapman, a member of the JMU Class of 2005.
