  1. Browse new titles of interest on the SMAD New Titles page. This list is updated once a month (sometimes more) and includes new titles for the last 60 days. It is based on purchases from funds set aside for SMAD and additional call numbers of interest, regardless of departmental fund. It is not sorted logically, but it's fun to browse.

  2. Subscribe to the SMAD New Titles RSS button  feed at http://leo.jmu.edu/feeds/media.xml.  This list matches the titles found on the SMAD New Titles page. Learn more about subscribing to RSS feeds on our RSS News Feed page.   

  3. Visit our New Titles List to browse the new books and videos added to the collection recently with funds specifically set aside for SMAD.  This is a subset of the titles on the SMAD New Titles list, but you can sort by call number, see book jackets, and explore books and videos purchased in other funds, too.  Clicking on "Show Titles" will show you the entire list.

  • Improved Readability- users now have the ability to make inline notes in the actual text, including dog-ears and bookmarks.  In addition, users can share notes and bookmarks with other users. 
  • Enhanced Usability
  • Value-based and Customer ratings- Safari will provide both an Amazon rating and a Safari Books online rating on all titles in their digital library. 
  • Safari has added the ability for users to categorize the material in its digital library by preference.  Users create and fill their own categories.

]]> Fri, 10 Jul 2009 09:51:00 GMT id1348typeNEWS New Comic Book Titles at JMU Libraries new titles to extend the series!  These titles are NOW AVAILABLE in the Carrier Library Browsing area.

See a list of the collection in LEO Library Catalog by searching on Comic Books Collection!  DC, Marvel, and several independent titles are available: Spider-Man, Iron Man, Superman, and the X-Men, Usagi Yojimbo, Sandman, and more!   Several full-run titles are available on DVD from Media Resources; most of these titles are in print and can be found in the Carrier Library Browsing Collection area on a freestanding rack. The Browsing collection is right next to the Circulation Desk. All comics in this collection, including DVDs, can be checked out.

The original project was funded by JMU Libraries' Special Projects and approved by the Collection Development Committee.  Circulation statistics for these titles will be tracked to evaluate the usefulness of this collection to the JMU Community.

Vanderbilt Television News Archive now offers streaming video from NBC and CNN!

Streaming video of NBC nightly news broadcasts (August 1968 to present) and CNN broadcasts (1995 to present).
Requires RealPlayer.
Content is added to the databases approximately 72 hours after it was broadcast.

900,000 abstracts of evening news broadcasts from ABC, NBC, and CBS (August 1968 to present); daily news programs from CNN (1995 to present), FOX News (2004 to present) and ABC Nightline (12 September 1988 to present); and a selection of special programs, including coverage of elections, political conventions, events related to September 11, 2001, and more. To see the video of these additional news programs, you have to put in a request for the material and pay a fee.

This is the first redesign of the EBSCOhost interface since 2002, and its functionality incorporates the latest technological advances.

  • Sort by name, date, location, and source type
  • Limit searches by word count to filter out news briefs and minor articles

As well as some 250 new records for 1972, the new release includes corrections and additions for existing records, making for a total of more than 48,000 records in all. The Catalog now offers a continuous history of American cinema from 1893 to 1972, and new records for the 1970s will continue to be added in forthcoming releases. 

1972 was a seminal year for American film, with the release of Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, along with a number of early films by Coppola's contemporaries from this new generation of filmmakers: 

  • Woody Allen's Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* but Were Afraid to Ask and Play it Again,
  • Sam Robert Altman's images
  • Peter Bogdanovich's What's Up, Doc?
  • John Boorman's Deliverance
  • Martin Scorsese's Boxcar Bertha
  • Michael Ritchie's The Candidate

The older generation of directors from the Classic Hollywood era were also still very active: this year saw the release of:

  • Billy Wilder's romantic comedy Avanti!,
  • Hitchcock's penultimate film Frenzy,
  • John Huston's western The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean and
  • Joseph L. Mankiewicz's Sleuth.

Other notable films of the year include The Poseidon Adventure, Sam Peckinpah's notorious Straw Dogs, and the ecological science fiction film Silent Running. 

As well as plot summaries, notes and source citations, all records include full production credits, details of cast and music, and indexing by both subject and genre. The 1972 records include a number of films indexed as 'Horror' (Dr Phibes Rises Again, Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left), 'Blaxploitation' (Super Fly, Shaft's Big Score!) or even both (Blacula). According to the decision, "media studies or film professors" may circumvent technology that prevents users from making copies (i.e. "access-control technologies") for "audiovisual works included in the educational library of a college or university’s film or media studies department" to make "compilations of portions of those works for educational use in the classroom."

ebrary includes many features which makes using these books online ideal.  Click on any word to link to definitions, biographies, or geographical information.  Create a personal bookshelf of titles, and insert bookmarks, notes, and highlighting in your selections.

When you use ebrary for the first time, you will be prompted to download a small plugin for your browser.

Visit ebrary directly to search and browse the collection.  In addition, all of our ebrary titles will soon be included in LEO Library Catalog so you can find them alongside other titles in our collection.
