Research Databases (articles)

Historical Abstracts: Indexes more than 2000 periodicals on world history from 1450 to the present, excluding the United States and Canada.

JSTOR: Includes full-text articles from journals in the humanities and social sciences.  Coverage is retrospective and does not include the most recent 2 to 5 years of issues.  For the most recent issues, search for the journal title in Periodical Locator or LEO.

Project Muse: Indexes journals in the humanities, social sciences, and mathematics, published by the Johns Hopkins University Press and other university presses.  Contains some full-text articles. 

 

Cultural Resources (music, film, and art)

Naxos Music Library: Naxos Music Library includes the complete Naxos, Marco Polo and Dacapo catalogues, which include Classical music, Jazz, World, Folk, and Chinese music.

MDID: Contains collections of digital images primarily for the teaching and study of art and art history.  Includes an online video collection from the Films for the Humanities and Sciences.

ARTstor: Contains images of architecture, painting, sculpture, photography, decorative arts, and design as well as many other forms of visual culture covering many cultures and time periods.

CAMIO: Offers rights-cleared, high-quality art images for class projects, art history and studio art programs, course Web sites, lectures, presentations, and research resources.

RLG Cultural Materials: A multimedia collection of primary sources to support every discipline, gathered from archives, libraries, and museums from around the world. Contains high-quality digital versions of maps, photographs, objects, documents, art, sound, and motion.

 

Open-Access Websites

Africa South of the Sahara (Stanford): http://library.stanford.edu/africa/guide.html

Serves as a guide to Internet resources on African cultures and peoples.  Sites are organized by country and topic.

National Museum of African Art (Smithsonian): http://www.nmafa.si.edu/index2.html

Provides online exhibits of traditional and modern African art.  Also links to Radio Africa, which provides streaming audio from the Smithsonian’s Global Sound collection.
