FAQ's:

What about Personal Laptops? - The CISCO VPN client is required to connect to the JMU on-Campus Wireless network. The VPN client establishes a secure connection using your JMU user-id and password for authentication. You may checkout a copy of the VPN client from Media Resources or download from Computing Support website.

What is the laptop loan period?
Our circulating laptop PCs—accompanied by an external mouse and AC adapter—can be checked out from the Media Center circulation desk (on the basement level) for a three-hour loan period to any JMU student, faculty and staff using the Library.  You’ll need your JMU Access card to check them out.

Can I renew a laptop?

The standard loan period is for three hours.  You may bring the laptop back to the Media Circulation Desk and check the laptop in and then back out for three more hours if no one else is waiting for one at the time.  This is the only way to "renew" or extend the loan period for laptops.

What can I use your wireless laptops for?
You can surf the web, access online library resources, and use the standard software included on our laptops for these functions:  Microsoft Office, WS-FTP, e-mail, as well as Putty for access to Peregrin, Leo and a general telnet session.

Can I access a campus fileserver?
You can access to a Novell campus fileserver, but you must first connect to the network with the laptop’s VPN Client. Instructions for connecting to the VPN Client are on each laptop, and the Novell Logon prompt is located on the Start Menu under Programs|Novell.

Can I print from a wireless laptop?
Pay for Print is also available for the loaner laptops.  Output may be printed from the first floor printing station (near the Reference Desk) just as if you were using any of the general wired workstations.  The username for the print job will be listed as MRLOANER. At this time, however, you cannot print from your own wireless laptop.

Can I depend on battery power when using your loaner laptop?
We recommend that you use the electrical adapter and a wall outlet if possible.  At this time, only one laptop battery can be provided with each PC loan.  Whenever convenient, you should use the adapter instead, to insure sufficient power for your loan period and to avoid sudden power failures that may affect data files you are working with.

What is the best way to save data I’m working with?
Should you need to save data while using one of the library laptops, it is suggested that you simply e-mail the data to yourself as an attachment.  In the event there is a problem with that procedure, data may be temporarily saved on each laptop in an area called TEMPORARY STORAGE.  But this storage space is limited and extremely volatile--there is no guarantee that your file will be available from TEMPORARY STORAGE after someone else has checked the laptop out.  A general caution here: All data saved to any location on the laptop hard drive other than the TEMPORARY STORAGE will be lost as soon as the computer is shut down or rebooted. Please be careful!

Is there technical assistance if I have a problem using your loaner laptops?
Technical assistance is normally available weekdays until 5pm. Basic instructions are provided with the equipment, which should be sufficient in most cases.  But please see the Media circulation desk for assistance, if needed, and appropriate staff will be contacted.

What do I need to use my own wireless laptop in Carrier Library?
In order to use your own wireless-capable laptop in Carrier Library, you will need to consult the requirements on the Wireless page.

Can I leave feedback about your wireless laptop service?

Please do. If you become a user of our loaner laptops and/or wireless service, offer us feedback, pro and con, at the Media Center circulation desk, or by sending email to hinegaja@jmu.edu.
