Resources in the Library

There is no music that is incompatible with dance, given an imaginative choreographer and talented performers.  However, music that has been successfully teamed with movement has certain characteristics such as repetition, similar phrase lengths, and varied stylistic sections.  The following resources should help you locate appropriate Music for Dance.

Classical music Recordings
List of all Ballet Recordings, Symphonic poems, Overtures, Dance Suites, Dance Music.

	To find recordings of a specific composer's music, perform a Word Search + composer's last name + then limit by "Musical Recording"
	To find recordings of specific instruments, perform a Word Search + instrument + then limit by "Musical Recordings" or see the instrument guides which do this for standard orchestral and western instruments.  For non-western instruments like gamelan or the hoon or onat you will need to perform the search yourself (see below under World and folk music
	To find recordings of specific genres, perform a Word Search + title/genre (plural form -- symphonies, concertos, sonatas) + then limit by "Musical Recording"

Additionally, you can use the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, and Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Music and Musicians to find articles and information about different forms of dance and various composers and their music.Another useful little book is Jennifer Goodenberger's Subject Guide to Classical Instrumental Music.  All of the above can be found in the Music Library reference section

Jazz
Our jazz collection is very broad in scope!   List of all Jazz Recordings (this takes about 45 seconds so be patient).

	To find recordings of a specific artist's music, perform a Word Search + composer's last name + then limit by "Musical Recording"
	To find recordings of specific instruments, perform a Word Search + instrument + then limit by "Musical Recordings" or see the instrument guides.

World and folk music Recordings
List of most Folk and World Music Recordings, Folk and World Music Videos

	To find recordings of a specific country or continent, perform a Subject Search + the phrase "music country" with country being the name of the continent or country (e.g. "music africa")
	To find recordings of specific non-western instruments, perform a Word Search + instrument + then limit by "Musical Recordings"  for example do a word search on gamelan and limit by recording.

Additionally, the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music in Carrier Library reference is an excellent resource with accompanying CD's.  It offers a good introduction to World Music.Popular music Recordings
Unfortunately the Music Library offers very little in the way of popular music recordings.  Local record stores, online sites, and your own collections will be the resource for popular music.
