Education has remained as an important entity in Rockingham County history. The compiler's 1989 Rockingham County bibliography contained 279 citations on education. The major thrust continues with higher education. This is represented by Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite University, and James Madison University.

A large number of sources from Eastern Mennonite University, including term papers, are available. Francis Wayland's magisterial history of Bridgewater College is a model in its scholarship. Emily Robertson's doctoral dissertation The Transformation of Madison College Into James Madison University: A Case Study well represents that university in scholarship. Public education is represented by Cecil Hartman's masters thesis A History of West Central Academy Rockingham County, Virginia.

This section is represented by term papers, masters theses, and doctoral dissertations.
