Abstract: As cartographer for Stonewall Jackson, Hotchkiss was involved in a number of Civil War battles including Cross Keys and Port Republic. Hotchkiss was involved in the development of The Grottes Company which, beginning in 1890, established present day Grottoes. The original name of the community was Shendun. Maps include two of Rockingham County. One is his famous "Map of the Valley."
