Freedom of the Press (Carrier REF PN 4736 .F74 and online)
Also good for info on worldwide censorship. Comes out annually. Find back to 2003 in Carrier Stacks and the most recent one in Carrier Reference.
World Press Encyclopedia (Carrier REF PN 4728 .Q53 2003 and online)
Comprehensive survey of press and electronic media for nearly 200 countries. Excellent source for censorship issues throughout the world.
Directories of Newspapers and Magazines
Historical and current directories that describe newspapers and magazines are located in two Reference areas. Most of the titles are at PN 4700 to PN 5115. Additional titles are at Z 6941. Consider browsing both locations.
Circulation Statistics
These directories will tell you how many people received the publication in a particular year.
Editor & Publisher International Year Book (Carrier REF PN 4700 .E42 2004)
Volumes back to 1973 in the stacks provide historical statistics. Current issues found in Reference.
Rowell's & Ayer's American Newspaper Directories (online)
Historical circulation statistics from 1869 to 1920. Digitized newspaper directory which provides basic facts (editor name, subscription cost) as well as advertising and circulation statistics about publications from 1869 to 1920. It was published under various titles including Rowell's American Newspaper Directory, and N.W. Ayer & Son's American Newspaper Annual and Directory.

This database is included in the Finding Images at JMU guide and deserves extra attention. Search and reuse photos as well as charts and graphs created by the Associated Press. Students can use these in class projects and presentations.
