The purpose of this guide, created for Dr. Flamiano's SMAD 498, is to list the resources explored in the library research session. If you have difficulty finding enough information on your topic, be sure to ask Jennifer Keach or another reference librarian for help.

Alternative Press Index
Description: Indexes alternative, radical, and left periodicals, newspapers and magazines that report and analyze the practices and theories of cultural, economic, political and social change. Coverage of subjects such as anarchism, democracy, ecology, feminism, gay and lesbian issues, indigenous peoples, labor, national liberation, and socialism is of an international and interdisciplinary scope. Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers
Description: Selective collection of digitized American newspapers from 1900 to 1910, as well as a directory of non-digitized newspapers from 1690 to the present.  The site is produced by the National Digital Newspaper Program, a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress.  Newspapers from California, Florida, Kentucky, New York, Utah, Virginia and the District of Columbia are currently included.

Communication & Mass Media Complete
Description: Communication and Mass Media Complete originated with the merging of two popular databases -- CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication Association (NCA)), and Mass Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Pennsylvania State University). Communication and Mass Media Complete covers 460 journals, and offers full text for over 200 titles.

Dissertation Abstracts Online with Digital Dissertations
Description: Indexing, abstracts, and full text for doctoral dissertations and master's theses. Dissertations published from 1980 forward include 350-word abstracts written by the author. Master's theses published from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. Generally, full text can be found from 1996-present.

Encyclopedia of Television Subjects, Themes, and Settings
Description: Appropriate for fans and scholars, and bursting with obscure facts, this work traces the evolution of specific topics from 1925 through the 2005-2006 season. Entries include such diverse themes as adolescence, adult film actresses on TV, bars, espionage, gays, immigrants, lawyers, transsexuals and truckers, as well as locations like Canada, Hawaii, New York and Los Angeles.

Ethnic NewsWatch
Description: Full text and indexing for ethnic, minority, and international newspapers and magazines. Ethnic NewsWatch is interdisiplinary in nature and contains titles in both English and Spanish.

Humanities and Social Sciences Index Retrospective: 1907-1984
Description: Indexes articles in the subjects of gerontology, history, international relations, journalism, law, linguistics, literary & social criticism literature, minority studies, music, performing arts, philosophy, planning & public administration, policy sciences, political science, psychiatry, psychology, public welfare, religion and theology, social work, sociology, and urban studies from 1907-1984.

Description: Full online text and images for back issues of selected scholarly journals in history, economics, political science, demography, mathematics, anthropology, sociology, education, literature, sciences and other fields. Consult the tables of contents for online holdings. Retrospective coverage varies for each title, but generally begins with the first issue published. For current issues (2 to 5 years from the present), look for print holdings in Periodical Locator.

LIFE Photo Archive
Description: Search millions of photographs from the LIFE photo archive, stretching from the 1750s to today. Most were never published and are now available for the first time through the joint work of LIFE and Google.

New York Times: Historical
Description: Full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue to about 3 years ago. The collection includes digital reproductions providing access to every page from every available issue.

The print version of the New York Times Index is shelved in the Abstract/Index section of Carrier Library Reference.  This resource helps you easily trace the development of an issue or event.

Vanderbilt Television News Archive
Description: CBS anchorman Dan Rather once said he lives with two burdens - the ratings and the Vanderbilt Television News Archive. Since 1968, the Archive has consistently recorded, indexed, and preserved network television news for research, review, and study.

Includes NBC news streaming video for August 1968 to present and CNN streaming video for 1995 to present. The database currently includes 900,000 records, including abstracts at the story level of regular evening news programs and catalog records for each special news program. You can request complete programs or compilations of selected items to be copied onto videotape, but the Archive charges fees to recover their costs. JMU Libraries does not subsidize videotape duplication or compilation loan fees from Vanderbilt Television News Archive.
