Sociological Abstracts (1952 - present)

Indexes and abstracts journal articles, book reviews, books, book chapters, dissertations, and conference papers in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences.

Annual Review of Sociology (Journal)

Documents research history and trends, provides bibliographies on current research topics, and identifies under-researched areas.

 

General Databases

Academic Search Complete (1887 - present)

Index and full-text source for scholarly journals and magazines. Contains nearly 12,000 publications, including more than 6,300 peer-reviewed publications. This scholarly collection offers information in nearly every area of academic study. Searchable cited references are provided for more than 1,000 titles.

Dissertations and Theses (1637 - present)

Indexing, abstracts, and full text for doctoral dissertations and master's theses.  Full text generally available from 1997-present; 1.2 million full text dissertations available in PDF format.  Includes 2.7 million searchable citations to dissertations and theses from around the world since 1861 to present.

FDSys (U.S. Government Printing Office) (1993- present)

Government Printing Office's (GPO) Federal Digital System (FDsys) provides public access to Government information submitted by Congress and Federal agencies and preserved as technology changes. Search over 1,000 Government databases through over 70 applications using the GPO Access specialized and multi-database search pages. Lists the databases available online from the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO). Provides access to databases regarding the budget, the code of federal regulations, and other topics.

JSTOR (1800s - 3 to 5 years ago)

Full online text and images for back issues of selected scholarly journals in history, economics, political science, demography, mathematics, anthropology, sociology, education, literature, sciences and other fields. Retrospective coverage varies for each title, but generally begins with the first issue published. For current issues (2 to 5 years from the present), look at holdings in Periodical Locator.

LexisNexis Academic

Includes a wide range of full-text databases and indexes for current news, company, industry, and financial information, government and political news, foreign language news, country and state profiles, biographies, general reference and directories, medical abstracts, accounting, auditing, and tax information, more than 200 law reviews and law journals, Federal case law, U.S. Code, U.S. Constitution and court rules, and state legal research.

County and City Data Book (UVA) (1988-2000)

 

Population Index (Office of Population Research, Princeton University) (1986-2000)

An index to all issues of Population Index published from 1986-2000. Includes a free-text search feature.

Alternative Press Index & Archive (1969 - present)

Alternative Press Index & Archive contains bibliographic information on over 300 international periodicals dealing with alternative, radical, and left information. Subjects covered include, among others: socialism, revolution, ecology, anarchism, feminism, homosexuality, and organized labor.

 

Related Field Databases

PsycInfo (1840 - present)

PsycINFO contains more than 2.9 million citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, books, dissertations and technical reports within the field of Psychology from as far back as the 1600s. Journal coverage, spanning from the 1800s to date, includes international material selected from 2,450 periodicals in 29 languages. This database includes information about the psychological aspects of disciplines such as medicine, psychiatry, sociology, linguistics, anthropology, education, law, physiology, business, nursing, and pharmacology. 

ERIC (1966 - present)

Covers educational periodicals and unpublished documents since 1966.

Communication and Mass Media Complete (1915 - current)

Communication and Mass Media Complete covers 730 journals, and offers full text for 200 titles in communication and mass media studies.

NCJRS Abstracts (U.S. Dept. of Justice) (1972-present)

An index with abstracts to criminal justice publications, including federal, state, and local government reports, books, research reports, journal articles, and unpublished research. Topics include corrections, courts, drugs and crime, law enforcement, juvenile justice, crime statistics, and victims of crime.

Criminal Justice Abstracts(1968 - present)

Criminal Justice Abstracts contains indexes and summaries of international journal articles, books, reports, dissertations, and unpublished papers. It is useful for criminology, justice studies, law, social work, sociology, and psychology.

PAIS International/Public Affairs Information Service(1915 - present)

Indexes publications on all subjects that relate to contemporary public issues and the making and evaluation of public policy.  Especially useful for isolating information at many geo-political levels - country, state, city, and borough.

Annual Review of Political Science(1998 - present)

According to Annual Reviews website, this series is published to save “you time by synthesizing the vast amount of primary research literature and identifying the principal contributions in your field.” A great way to keep up with research trends, this source provides reviews of the scholarly literature on various Political Science topics.

Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts (1987 - present)

Indexes and abstracts articles covering health, social services, psychology, sociology, economics, politics, race relations and education. ASSIA currently contains over 375,000 records from over 500 journals published in 16 different countries.

Social Services Abstracts(1979 - present)

Indexes and abstracts journal articles, dissertations, and book reviews on social work, human services, and related areas, including social welfare, social policy, and community development.

Population Specific Databases

Contemporary Women's Issues

Contemporary Women's Issues contains information relevant to women's lives.  Content is gathered from English-language periodicals, newsletters, gray literature, and alternative press articles published in North, Central, and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.

Ethnic NewsWatch (1990 - present)

Full text and indexing for ethnic, minority, and international newspapers and magazines. Ethnic NewsWatch is interdisciplinary in nature and contains titles in both English and Spanish.

Criminology (1921-present)

Includes full text of 24 journals, encompassing over 20,400 articles and up to 87 years of backfiles.  Covers such subjects as criminal justice, juvenile delinquency, corrections, forensic psychology, and family violence.

Women's Studies International (1972 - present)

Women's Studies International (WSI) covers the core disciplines in Women's Studies and the latest scholarship in feminist research, sociology, history, political science, public policy, and more. This database contains 800 essential sources such as journals, newspapers, and dissertations. WSI includes the following files: Women Studies Abstracts, Women's Studies Bibliography Database, Women Studies Librarian, Women of Color and Southern Women: A Bibliography of Social Science Research, and Women's Health & Development: An Annotated Bibliography.

Ageline (1961 - present)

AgeLine contains materials from the health sciences, psychology, sociology, social work, economics, and public policy related to aging and gerontology.  Includes books, book chapters, journals, and reports.  This resource was designed to address aging issues from individual, national, and global perspectives.

Alternative Press Index & Archive (1969 - present)

Covers articles relevant to many minority populations (age, race, sexual orientation, etc.).
