This collection was donated in 2006 by Richard K. McNealy, retired USA colonel and cover artist for Morley-Mower's Flying Blind.
Biographical Note
Geoffrey Morley-Mower (1918-2005), was born in London, England. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1937 and served for 31 years. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Force Cross. Morley-Mower flew Hawker Hurricanes, American Mustangs, and subsonic jet aircraft, and his assignments included India, the Middle East, Gibraltar, and Cyprus. Towards the end of his service with RAF, he was assigned to the Pentagon and subsequently moved his family to the United States. In 1968, Morley-Mower became a James Madison University professor in the English Department. He continued his career at James Madison until his death in 2005.
Scope and Content
The Geoffrey Morley-Mower Collection, 1999-2001, includes a draft of Morley-Mower's memoir Flying Blind, correspondence with artist and collection donor Richard K. McNealy, and images and copies of paintings and drawings used to illustrate Flying Blind.
The collection includes correspondence received by Richard K. McNealy from Morley-Mower, which primarily deals with the illstrations which McNealy created for Flying Blind. A copy of correspondence from Yucca Tree Press is also included. The images of the collection include a hand drawn diagram of the "Wapiti" in ink, copies of paintings by McNealy, John Young, and Wilfred Hardy, a copy of the publisher's proof for the cover of Flying Blind, and photocopies of Morley-Mower's personal aerial and ground photographs.
