The Trio Beauty Salon Collection, 1935-2004, consists of five Hollinger boxes containing various records and mementos related to the Trio Beauty Salon of Harrisonburg, VA. These records span the years from 1938-2004, with the majority dating from the time the salon was open from 1938-1976. They include legal and financial documents, photographs, record books, and personal documents of the operators of the salon. The collection is arranged in four series: Legal Documents and Correspondence, Financial and Tax Statements, Financial Records, and Personal Records.

Biographical Note: Trio Beauty Salon opened on July 15, 1941 at 14 Newman Ave, Harrisonburg, VA. It was known formerly as the Gay Lynn Beauty Shop. The three partners of the Trio Beauty Salon were Evelyn Taylor, Mildred Bridges, and Ava Gowl, but also included Ruby Dove and Ruth Kerns as owners and operators. The salon was opened for 35 years before closing in 1976. After closing shop the owners continued to work elsewhere in the Harrisonburg area, and kept records of where they went.
Scope and Content:
The Trio Beauty Salon Collection, 1935-2004, consists of five Hollinger boxes at 2.12 linear feet that contain various documents and records pertaining to the Trio Beauty Salon and its owners and operators.
Series I: Documents and Correspondence consists of one Hollinger box of legal documents and memorabilia from the Trio Beauty Salon. It contains one photograph of the owners and operators, one blueprint, letters from the U.S. Department of labor, change of business name documents, documents related to the opening of the salon and related businesses, insurance papers, partnership agreements, property leases, and withholding exemption statements.
Series II: Financial and Tax Statements contains one Hollinger boxes of financial statements and tax related documents. This includes Harrisonburg taxes, as well as tax returns and statements from the state of Virginia and the IRS. These documents span the years from 1944-1976.
Series III: Financial Records includes eight record books in two Hollinger boxes documenting the years from 1938-1976. These records track monthly expenses in terms of the supplies, wages, taxes, miscellaneous expenses, rent, lighting, repairs, and equipment for Trio Beauty Salon.
Series IV: Personal Records contains the personal documents and records of Beulah Ruth Kerns Clatterbuck, one of the owners and operators of Trio Beauty Salon. This series includes a brief personal timeline of Beulah Ruth Kerns, her high school diploma, beauty school notes, diploma from Pauline’s Beauty School, certificate of authorization to be a practicing hairdresser, certificate to use the Frederic’s Method, cosmetology licenses from 1963-2004, Virginia Board of Cosmetology Rules and Regulations from 1992, and the obituary of owner and operator Flora Evelyn Lamb.
