Bio/Historical Note:
The first library for the State Normal and Industrial School for Women opened in a room on the first floor of Maury Hall in October 1908 and the first book in the collection was a Bible donated by Hollins College President Mattie Cocke. The school quickly outgrew the space and by 1913 the library was already filled to capacity. A reading room was opened in Harrison Hall in February of 1927. In 1938, President Duke secured Public Work Administration funds and began groundbreaking for the new Madison Memorial Library and it was completed in 1939 at a cost of $140,000. As the school continued to grow the library space was soon not adequate to meet the needs of an expanding student body. By 1977, there was only one chair for every thirteen students. Library expansions took place in 1979, 1982, and 1995, effectively doubling the size to keep pace with the exponentially growing campus. The building was renamed as Carrier Library after then University President Ronald Carrier and his wife Edith in 1984.

Rose Library, formerly known as East Campus Library, was built in August 2008. The modern facility serves as a repository of science and technical material. It was named after JMU’s fifth president, Dr. Linwood Rose.

The Educational Technology & Media Center promotes the use of technology for learning and provides the educational technology faculty and students need. ERIC, the Educational Resource Information Center, was the first database.

Scope and Content:  The Libraries & Educational Technologies Records span from 1939 to 2014, with the bulk of the records from 1988 to 2012. The records detail the daily running of the library and document its position as an academic resource on the JMU campus. Records consist of financial records, committee reports, library policies, and various subject files primarily from the office of the Dean as well as the Associate Dean.

The Library History series contains items of interest such as Special Collections brochures, library workbooks, photographs, and architectural drawings. The financial papers consist of annual reports, departmental budgets, committees, and policies that relate to acquisitions and collection management. The library history series contains a scrapbook of the new library building from 1939-1941, clippings on the 1982 addition, and the Library Quarterly from 1976-1978. It also contains architectural drawings of Rose library, as well as some renderings of the placement of furniture in the building.

The Annual Reports are from various departments within the library such as Periodicals, Serials, Technical Service Division, Educational Media Lab, and Collection Development, as well as a general summary report from JMU Libraries. The Budget subseries relates to collection management and acquisitions and contains many budgets for different areas of the library. Each budget is accompanied by an explanatory note.

The Library Skills Workbooks range from 1983-1995 and explain how to use the library and incidentally describe the process of finding a book before and after online cataloging was introduced to JMU’s libraries. Oversize container 5 (OV5) is located in the map case and contains architectural renderings of Rose Library showing placement of furniture on each floor of the library as well as architectural renderings for a new security entrance. Also contained in OV5 is a poster titled New Library for the College of Integrated Science and Technology Campus, October 2004 with images of the CISAT campus.
