HOAK LEDGER.   SC #4023
CARRIER LIBRARY, JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
Harrisonburg, VA 22807
Compiled by Chris Bolgiano, September 2001

SCOPE AND CONTENT.
This collection consists of 1bound ledger, 1794-1855.  Front cover is missing and back cover is detached.  On the last page is written "Gasper Hoak his book."   Entries are mostly in German script with columns of numbers.  According to Mr. John Stewart, JMU Faculty Emeritus and a native German speaker, the German entries refer frequently to shoeing horses, repairing wagons, and sales of wheat and grain.  One page dated 1803 is in English and appears to be a recipe for whiskey.

PROVENANCE.  Purchased in June, 2001 from Green Valley Auctions, Mt. Crawford, VA.  This item came from the collection of a Lexington resident and is thought to have originated in Shenandoah or Page County, VA, where the Hoak family name can be documented.
