Carrier Library, James Madison University
Harrisonburg, VA 22807
Compiled by Chris Bolgiano, March 1998
Scope and Content. One large, tied ledger, 1857-[1861-68]-1892, apparently kept by Dr. George W. Kemper, Jr. Entries are by name, with various dates and notes beneath each name. There are several inserts, one of which is tied in (on the page numbered 139) and is addressed to G.W. Kemper of Port Republic, VA in 1892; most other inserts bear the name Geo. W. Kemper. Although the majority of the entries date from the 1860s, there is little direct mention of the Civil War; on the page numbered 30 is a note, "Killed in battle."George W. Kemper, Jr.(1814 -1902) graduated in medicine from Jefferson College, Philadelphia, PA and practiced in Port Republic and its vicinity. He was also active in community affairs, serving as sheriff of Rockingham County in 1851-52, commissioner of the school literary fund for county district 10 in 1861, and in 1869 helping to found the Rockingham Home Mutual Fire Insurance Company. In June of 1862, Kemper's house, Madison Hall, served as the resting place for Confederate General Turner Ashby's body before it was taken to Charlottesville for burial, and it is said that Stonewall Jackson stayed there as Kemper's guest before the battle of Cross Keys.
NOTE: Ledger has damaged front pages, is in poor condition and cannot be photocopied.
