SCOPE & CONTENT
This collection consists of bound record books from various organizations and individuals, documenting a variety of agricultural, social, commercial, and educational endeavors in Harrisonburg and surrounding counties in the 19th and 20th centuries.
PROVENANCE
These items were placed on deposit by contract with the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society. Further items from the same source may be added.
ORGANIZATION
Items are placed in the collection in order of accession. Materials which had been inserted in the record books are located in folders following the book.
BOX 1
Book #1. 1923-24. The Contract Book of Tobacco Growers Cooperative Association. Contains marketing and association agreements. Folder contains agreement, affidavit, and two letters.
Book #2. 1856-58. Unidentified business ledger. Lists sales of brandy as well as other items and labor.
Book #3. April, 1891 - Oct. 1892. [Minutes of the Board of Directors of the Grottoes Investment Company].
Book #4. July, 1897 - April, 1898. [Minutes of the Ashby Memorial Association]
Book #5. Oct. 1888 - April, 1895. The Virginia Public School Register, Public White School No. 6, Plains District, Rockingham County. Lists pupils, subjects, attendance registers, & description of school house.
BOX 2, Cobbler's ledgers:
Book #6. 1868-1876. "This book was bought by P C Kaylor at Executors Sale of John E. Werner, a son of John Werner the shoemaker." Mostly shoe repairs and manufacture.
Book #7. 1873-1890. Shoes & farm items & labor.
Book #8. 1858-1867. [James?] Bush's Book. Records of Bush's agricultural labor and payment.
Book #9. 1895-96. George Kiser's Estate. Money received & paid.
BOX 2 con't., Kyle ledgers:
Book #10. 1816-1857. "For Stock Bought and Sold by David Kyle." Includes livestock and other agricultural transactions.
Book #11. 1837-1881. Ledger of Dr. Harvey Kyle of Bridgewater? Early part of ledger lists "visits and medicine," including to Negroes; later entries concern land, bonds, etc. "in account with Harvey Kyle his committee." Inserts include a few letters & list of Kyle family (p.124).
Book #12. 1840-1846. James Kyle Account Book. Begins in Baltimore; lists various items from spices to furniture; back cover gives data on Kyle's moves around the Valley. Includes "a sale Bill of the Property of D. Kyle, September 24, 1846."
Book #13. 1844-1868. "Harvey & James Kyle Executors of David Kyle Sr. dec." Cash accounts received and paid.
Book #14. 1862-63. Ledger "The County of Rockingham with John Burkholder Salt Agent." Harrisonburg. Receipts pasted in.
