Burruss Historical Research Grants
in
JMU Institutional History

A special program for the celebration
 of James Madison University's Centennial in 2008


As James Madison University approaches the centennial of its establishment in 1908, there is a rising level of interest in documenting the institution's past. Through the generosity of Madison College alumna Mrs. Margaret Hanna Brooks Burruss, Carrier Library is able to offer grants for research into JMU's history.  Proposals are invited from any member of the University or wider community.

Please Note:  Grant-funded research projects are considered "works for hire" for which the University owns copyright; however, permission to publish is usually given to the author. Grants are dispensed quarterly pending submission of progress reports. Researchers must agree to abide by all University regulations concerning use of human subjects.

    


Purpose of the Grant:  To produce a research paper, exhibit plan, or other tangible product that will be added to Carrier Library's publicly accessible collections for potential use during the 2008/9 centennial celebration. 

Who May Apply:  Any member of the University or wider community.

Subject Areas:  Any aspect of institutional history.

When to Apply:  September 1 to May 15.

Funding Limit:  Due to economic constraints, requests must be limited to $1,500.

Payment Schedule:  Awards will be paid in segments over the timeline of the project.

Proposal Guidelines:  Applicants should submit a 3 page typed proposal with the following sections:

  • Scope: define the topic to be researched.

  • Major Researcher:  Identify who will be responsible for insuring that all parts of the project are completed.
  • Methodology and Timeline: Explain how the project will be conducted: library/archival research, interviews, etc., and when completion is expected. 
  • Exhibit Possibilities:  identify photos, equipment, clothing, or other artifacts that may support a display.
  • Budget: Outline all projected expenses. 

Submission: Send proposals to Special Collections (library-special@jmu.edu), Carrier Library Special Collections, MSC 1704, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA 22807. Proposals will be reviewed by Library faculty and awards announced approximately one month after receipt.
