Special Collections Visitor Information
- General Information
Special Collections is open to all. When visiting Special Collections for the first time, patrons will be asked to provide proof of identity and to complete a User Registration Form. Researchers must register and may use materials only in the Special Collections Reading Room. Exception: Theses and dissertations are served in a designated location in the reference area. Be sure to read Using the Collections.
During Fall and Spring Semesters, Special Collections is open Monday through Friday 10:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. Those who come from a distance are advised to make an appointment with Special Collections staff (firstname.lastname@example.org). Mail, email and phone requests will be acknowledged promptly.
- Photocopy/Reproduction Requests (updated March 2010)
Patrons are fully responsible for abiding by copyright law stipulations (Title 17, U.S. Code) that a copy is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." Although Special Collections will make every effort to assist patrons in gathering the information necessary to clarify applicable copyright provisions, in all cases it is the responsibility of the patron to determine whether a work has passed into public domain; to determine copyright ownership of a work; and to procure from such owner(s) permission to quote beyond "fair use" limits or to publish an unpublished work whole or in part.
Due to limited staffing, Special Collections cannot guarantee same-day reproduction service. Every effort is made to complete a copy request in a timely fashion. Special Collections staff reserve the right to refuse any request. Reproduction is limited to 50 pages. Requests for reproductions of entire works/collections, even if less than 50 pages, may not be accommodated. Legibility of photocopied or scanned manuscripts cannot be guaranteed.
For requests for photocopies by phone, mail, or email, the patron must complete a Reproduction Request Form. This form may be downloaded here and completed by the patron, or SC staff may complete it for the patron and email or mail it to the patron for his/her review. [The first 10 photocopies are free to all patrons; whether by mail or on-site, and does not include a handling fee.] Once the form and payment are received and approved in SC, the order will be processed. On-site patrons may be asked to return for copies or scans if they cannot be made at the time of request. Special Collections accepts cash [for on-site patrons] and personal checks. Checks are to be made payable to James Madison University. JAC cards are not accepted.
Publishing and Permissions
Those who wish to publish excerpts from any Special Collections materials must complete the appropriate permission form and send it to Special Collections. For collections that are on deposit, Special Collections refers the patron to the proprietary institution with the authority to grant permission for publishing materials from the collection in question. The researcher assumes all responsibility for abiding by U.S. copyright law.
- If you are seeking permission to use print materials or manuscript/archival collections, please use the Application to Quote or Publish from Collections [you may also complete this electronically here.]
- If you are seeking permission to use audio/visual material, including transcripts, please use the Application to Quote Publish, or Distribute Audio/Visual Material. [There is no electronic form available.]
A parking permit must be hung from the rear view mirror and may be obtained Monday-Friday 7:00 am - 4:30 pm at the ground-level office of the Parking Deck, and online through JMU Parking Services. The Parking Services Website includes helpful campus parking maps. To reach the Parking Deck, take the Port Republic Road exit (west) from I81 toward JMU, and make an almost immediate right onto Bluestone Drive (WVPT Public TV is located on the campus side of that corner). Pass Sonner Hall and Showker Hall on the left and take the next left turn on Champions Drive. This will lead you to the Parking Deck.
