Use your JMU Access Card (JAC) to check out items. The public is welcome to use JMU Libraries’ resources, but must meet the following criteria before checking out material.
 

 

Local Colleges (BC, BRCC, EMU) – current school ID + another form of ID

Community Borrowers – Must either be 18 yrs of age and have a MRL library card and a photo ID or present an RMH employee ID

State Teacher – Present an employee ID of a VA state school system, college, or university

Friends of the Library – Proof of current membership

Returning Books
All library materials may be returned to any JMU Library location during operating hours. Books and media from any JMU Library may also be returned at any time via the drive-up book depository near Rose Library, located on Alumni Drive. When the Libraries are closed, books may also be returned via Carrier Library's outside depository (located near the end of the building to the left of the glass entrance).

Renewing Books
Books may be renewed : 

  • Online using "My Account ",  
  • Email to library-circulation@jmu.edu
  • Phone by calling 568-6150 or 568-2731 during open hours, or
  • In person by bringing proper identification to the Circulation/Information desk of the library.

Requesting / Holding Books
Books currently checked-out may be requested by another borrower who has proper identification. Place "hold requests" using the JMU Library Catalog.

Recalling Books
JMU Libraries may request books be returned after a minimum usage of 3 weeks, or immediately if needed for Course Reserves.  Borrower will be notified by email of new due date. Fines begin accruing on the 4th day after the new due date.

Fine Policy
Borrowers are given 3 days past the due date to return books without paying fines. On the 4th day overdue, fines are assessed at $1.00 per book. Each additional day overdue is $.25 per book.  Undergrad and grad students are blocked from checking out materials when their fines reach $10.  Faculty, staff, and doctoral students are blocked at $100.

Lost Books
Replacement and processing fees are charged for books declared lost by the borrower, or not returned within 40 days after the due date.

Current and Bound Periodicals
All patrons may use periodicals in the library. Periodicals may be checked out by Doctoral Students, Faculty, and Staff for a limited time period.

Journals and Other Items in Storage
Requests to retrieve items from "Storage" may be made online (click here for form), or in person at the Carrier Public Services Desk. These items are retrieved hourly between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. weekdays with more limited hours on weekends.

My Account
The "My Account" function on the JMU Library Catalog allows you to see the due dates of items you have checked out, track hold requests, see fines owed, renew items, and track reading history.
