Bio/Historical Note

Naomi Virginia Thacker Lockard (1913-2006) was born in Rockingham County, Virginia to Albert Myers Thacker and Lessie Virginia Showalter Thacker. She graduated from Bridgewater (Va.) High School in 1936 and was the class salutatorian. Lockard enrolled in Madison College as a transfer student from Shenandoah College. At Madison, she was a member of the Sesame Club, an organization aimed at bringing day students "into closer union with the girls who board at college." Lockard graduated in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree and went on to complete a dietetic internship at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. She married Lonzo Lockard and together they had three children.

Lockard retired in 1979 after 30 years of service at the Veterans Administration in Martinsburg, West Virginia. She was active in professional and community organizations including the American Dietetic Association, Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 896, and American Legion Post 14 Auxiliary.
