“Rhythm of Scripts” Art Exhibit in the Music Library

Posted August 17, 2026 in Uncategorized

Discover the beauty of penmanship at Rhythm of Scripts, a new exhibit in The little Gallery Underground in the Music Library (Room B59, Music Building).

This art exhibit features the work of Professor Zenab Bastawala of JMU’s School of Art, Design, and Art History.

Rhythm of Scripts celebrates the expressive art of calligraphy, bringing together writing traditions from India, the Arab world, and beyond, where the written word becomes both language and visual art. Featuring contemporary works alongside explorations of historical letterforms, the exhibition highlights the beauty, movement, and craftsmanship of hand-drawn scripts across cultures and traditions. Presented in the Music Library, the exhibition invites visitors to discover the deep connection between music and calligraphy. Both are grounded in rhythm, movement, balance, and disciplined practice, transforming simple gestures into meaningful expression. Through a selection of original calligraphic works, process sketches, and experimental lettering, the exhibition reveals how scripts can communicate not only words but also emotion, identity, and cultural heritage. Rhythm of Scripts offers an opportunity to slow down, appreciate the artistry of the handwritten letter, and rediscover the enduring beauty of writing by hand. Like music, calligraphy transcends language, inviting us to experience the universal rhythm and harmony expressed through the movement of the pen.

reception celebrating the exhibit will be held on Friday, September 18, 4-6 p.m.
