About Our Borrowing Policies

We’ve carefully designed our borrowing policies to support our community, provide fair and equitable access, and encourage use of our physical resources. Key features of our borrowing policies include:

• Simple, consistent loan periods (4 months, 4 weeks, 4 days, or 4 hours)
• No overdue fines — we only charge if an item is damaged or needs to be replaced
• Equivalent loan periods for JMU students, staff, and faculty
• Generous access privileges for non-JMU Community Borrowers
• Subsidized Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service, up to $45.00 per transaction for JMU students, staff, and faculty

Factors that went into our borrowing policies include benefit and effectiveness for patrons and staff, best practices on a system management level, and a goal of reflecting trends in academic libraries, the ALA Library Bill of Rights, and our own Collection Management policy.
