Creating your own open textbook gives you the ultimate ability to customize the materials to support your pedagogical goals. While traditional textbooks are mostly static, open textbooks can be changed as needed to meet your course objectives.

Open textbooks and other affordable course materials can also help make a college education more accessible. The cost of textbooks is a serious problem for some students.

If you’re interested in learning how to publish your own online open textbook, join our self-paced Canvas course specifically designed for JMU instructors. You’ll learn how you can publish an online open textbook with tools and support from JMU Libraries. The course covers textbook design, interactive textbook elements, intellectual property considerations, an introduction to a textbook publishing platform, and more.

At the completion of this self-paced workshop, you will be able to:

  • Outline the structure and features of an open textbook
  • Develop a project management plan for an open textbook
