Scores Search Help

Scores for a specific instrument: use or combine any of the following. The catalog requires precise spelling.  Consult Google as necessary.

  • Instrument name
  • Composer’s last name
  • Genre search or genre as part of the title: use the plural form such as “sonatas”, “symphonies” and “quartets”. Or, use the asterisk (*) to perform a “wildcard search” which searches all variations of the word.  For example, quartet* locates quartet, quartets, and quartettes.
  • Significant words from the title
  • Opus or other numbers: Use only the number; omit letters or words proceeding the number such as “opus”,  “op” or  “K”.  If few or no results are found, remove the number.

Example: To locate the piano prelude, “Les fees sont d’exquises danseuses” by Debussy:

  • Significant words from the song or aria title (typically in the original language).

Example: To locate Puccini’s “O mio babbino caro”, perform this search:

Scores of operas, oratarios, or other large works: use or combine any of the following. The catalog requires precise spelling.  Consult Google as necessary.

  • Composer’s last name
  • Title of the work (typically in the original language)

Example: To locate Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi”, perform this search:

Applying limits to a search

  • At the top of the results page, click “Limit Search” 
  • To limit to only scores in the Music Library, LIMIT the location to “music library”.  This removes online scores.
  • To limit to only online scores, LIMIT the location to “internet”
