Reserves Copyright Guidelines

Books or Media

Instructors may place books owned by the JMU Libraries on reserve. They may also place their personal copies of books on reserve, excluding custom textbooks and those with disclaimers. Videos, DVDs, and other non-print media (either owned by JMU Libraries or by the instructor) may be placed on physical reserve.  JMU Libraries assume no liability for materials that are lost or damaged. Materials obtained through Interlibrary Loan or otherwise not owned by JMU Libraries or the instructor cannot be placed on reserve. If neither the library nor the instructor owns the item needed, reserve staff in collaboration with Liaison Librarians, are able to order new materials for the collection that can be put on reserve at any JMU library location.

Periodicals

Hard copies of periodicals owned by the library cannot be placed on reserve. However, instructors may place their personal copies of periodicals on reserve for which the library will assume no liability.

Electronic Books (E-Books)

Where licensing allows, e-books purchased by JMU Libraries can be linked to course reserve records. Printouts of e-books will not be placed on reserve.

Purchased Reprints and Consumables

Reprints and consumables (workbooks, exercises, published tests, answer sheets, etc.) may be purchased and placed on reserve. No photocopies may be made from either.

Electronic Reserves

Due to changes in technology, legal resources, and human resources, JMU Libraries no longer digitize and host electronic articles and book chapters in the course reserve system. For most digital items, placing them (or inserting links to them) directly in your Canvas course is the preferred method. If you need assistance or would like to consult about the best method, please contact reserves@jmu.edu.

Course Packets

Course packets purchased by students are considered to be for their personal use and may not be placed on reserve.
