Publishing Open Textbooks at JMU

If you’re interested in learning how to publish your own online open textbook with support from JMU Libraries, join our self-paced Canvas course specifically designed for JMU instructors.
This self-paced course covers textbook design, interactive textbook elements, intellectual property considerations, an introduction to a textbook publishing platform, and more.
We also offer a virtual workshop for faculty on this topic.
Why publish an open textbook?
Creating your own open textbook gives you the ultimate ability to customize the materials to support your pedagogical goals. While traditional textbooks are mostly static, open textbooks can be changed as needed to meet your course objectives.
Also, the cost of textbooks is a serious problem for some students. Open textbooks and other open course materials can also help make a college education more affordable and accessible.
Objectives:
At the completion of this self-paced workshop, you will be able to:
- Outline the structure and features of an open textbook
- Develop a project management plan for an open textbook
- Coordinate textbook design, editing, and licensing decisions
- Formulate a dissemination plan and publish a textbook online
