Microforms

You can use a microform machine to view and scan microforms (microfilm reels or microfiche cards) at JMU Libraries Express during any of its hours of operation. Two microform machines are available on a first come, first served basis. You will find a printed quick start guide next to the machines. Microforms are for in-library use only.

Submitting a Request

Library Search

When requesting microforms through Library Search, avoid delays by entering the volume and year information as a comment. Otherwise, we will contact you by email to clarify your needs

Interlibrary Loan

You may also request microforms through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) using the ILL Book Request form for the following conditions.

  • Scans of microforms 
    A specific scan from any microfilm or microfiche item owned by JMU Libraries can be delivered electronically to your ILL account, where it can be viewed without special equipment. 
  • Microforms not owned by JMU Libraries 
    Most lending libraries allow microforms to be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan with In-Library-Use Only restrictions. When possible, ILL staff will locate a digital version instead and deliver it electronically to your ILL account.

If this is your first time using a microform machine or you need assistance using the machine, please send us a message to request support.  

Library staff will reach out to schedule an appointment with you within 2 working days. We do not take appointments on the weekend or when the university is closed.
