Laptop Loans

students with laptops in library study area

Students, faculty, or staff who need access to technology resources to support academic functions may check out laptops from our Equipment Loans service. The laptops are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

All of the laptops are Dell computers running Windows 10.

To request a laptop to check out, please fill out this Equipment Reservation Request form or stop by the Learning Innovations & Design Desk in Rose Library. For inquiries, please contact us at equipmentloans@jmu.edu.

This service is a collaborative effort between JMU Libraries and Information Technology.

Audience

Laptop loans are available to JMU students, faculty, and staff. This service is not available to alumni, affiliates, or community members. For more information about general access to computing resources at JMU, please see the Libraries’ Services For Visitors.

Terms

Laptops are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The standard checkout period for a laptop is 1 month, or until the end of the semester, depending on which occurs first. You may request to renew your 1-month loan of a laptop, but we will be able to renew it only if there is not a wait list.

If you borrow a laptop, you must follow the University’s policy on the Appropriate Use of Information Technology Resources (Policy 1207) and the Libraries’ Equipment Loan Policy.

If you are unable to pick up the laptop in person, you may contact us to designate another person to pick it up on your behalf.

In the event of extenuating circumstances that necessitate longer-term access to a laptop loan:

  • Students should contact their Academic Unit Head (AUH) to explain their circumstances, and we will work with the AUH to identify the best solution. AUHs can contact Equipment Loans at equipmentloans@jmu.edu.
  • Faculty or staff should have their supervisor contact Equipment Loans at equipmentloans@jmu.edu to explain the need for an extended checkout.

If you have a shorter-term or intermittent computing need, please consider using one of JMU’s Computing Labs, which serve general and class-specific computing needs.

If you need to have a JMU-owned computer repaired, you do not need to use this Laptop Loans service. Instead, contact the IT Help Desk for more information about repairs for JMU-owned computers.

If the laptop you check out is lost, stolen, or damaged, you must immediately report the incident to Equipment Loans. Unreturned equipment may result in fines and/or holds placed on student accounts.
