Important Reminder on Changes to Open Science Framework (OSF)
Posted October 28, 2026 in JMU Libraries News
As we shared in August, the Open Science Framework (OSF) will phase out OSF Projects starting this month.
Moving forward, OSF will no longer function as a general project collaboration or file management tool.
As a reminder, here are the key dates you need to know:
- Starting November 16, 2026: OSF users will not be able to create new projects or add new project components.
- Starting February 19, 2027: All existing OSF Projects (both public and private) will be read-only. You will continue to have access to all project materials, but no further changes or additions can be made. All public projects will remain persistent, discoverable, and accessible at the same URLs and DOIs. Private content will remain accessible to collaborators and via existing view-only-links.
After these changes take effect, OSF will continue to host and expand features for study planning through registration, sharing papers and preprints, and linking various parts of your research process together.
Recommended Next Steps: If you currently use OSF Projects for active research collaboration or private file storage, please plan to back up your data or migrate your active workflows to a different platform.
Learn More: Read the announcement from the Center for Open Science or sign up for their OSF Essentials webinar on November 5 at 11 a.m.
