Makery Orientation & Training
Orientation to The Makery
To ensure a safe and productive environment for everyone, all Makery users are required to complete a brief, one-time orientation. The orientation is available as a module in the JMU Libraries Makery Canvas course.
This brief orientation covers essential safety guidelines and principles to help you feel confident as you start your first project. Please complete the orientation online before your visit for a seamless experience. Staff will verify that you have completed the orientation.
Community members without access to Canvas should arrive early to complete a hardcopy version of the orientation.
Training for Specific Equipment
After completing the JMU Libraries Makery orientation, we highly recommend (and in some cases require) specific training modules before reserving or using certain tools or equipment. These modules are found later in the JMU Libraries Makery Canvas course, and they introduce foundational concepts, answer common questions, and help you make the most of your time in The Makery.
Training is required prior to using and/or reserving the following equipment:
- Sewing
- Electronics Workbench
- Laser Cutting
- Audio/Video Studios (Audio Recording or Video Recording)
Training is recommended for all other equipment.
Workshops
Makery workshops provide an opportunity for you to work directly with JMU Libraries staff to build on the concepts, equipment, techniques, and skills introduced in the modules.
If you are unable to complete the orientation online before your workshop, please arrive early to complete it using one of our lab computers or a hard copy.
