- Preferred method for off campus access. Try this one first.
- Download and install Pulse Secure from JMU Computing or use the Pulse Secure app for mobile devices.
- Start Pulse Secure before opening your web browser to do library research.

Windows/Mac Instructions:
- Go to https://sslvpn.jmu.edu
- Log in with your JMU eID and password
- Press the "Start" button to download the Pulse Secure program to your computer.
- You may be prompted to update Java
- If security settings block you from opening the Pulse Secure installation file, right click the file and select "Open"
- After you have installed Pulse Secure, you can access library resources by starting up Pulse Secure before opening your web browser. For more information, check out JMU Computing's Pulse Secure guide.
iPad Instructions:
The Pulse Secure mobile app connects iOS and Android devices to JMU's SSL VPN service. This app is not officially supported by JMU Libraries or JMU IT. The following configuration information is provided for your convenience, should you choose to pursue this option on your own.
- Install the Pulse Secure app from the App Store.
- Tap Accept to accept the terms and conditions of use.
- Tap Enable on the following screen.
- The next screen you see will have two sections: VPN and Collaboration. In the VPN section tap the black arrow next to "not selected".
- In the new window, you'll see these fields:
- Name - Name the VPN connection something useful, like JMU VPN.
- URL - Enter https://sslvpn.jmu.edu.
- Username - Enter your eID.
- Authentication - Enter your password.
- Realm - Leave this blank.
- Role- Leave this blank.
- Once the fields are filled out, tap Save.
- The JMU VPN will then be available in the VPN section.
- Tap the orange Connect button, then log in with your eID and password.
- Tap the green Sign In button. Look for these indications that the VPN has successfully connected:
- The orange button in the VPN section of the app reads Disconnect.
- There is a small, green checkmark in the VPN area.
- A VPN badge appears in the iPad heading next to the wifi indicator (upper left corner of the device).
If all 3 indicators are displayed, you can minimize the app and use a web browser on the iPad to access library resources.
Recommended iPad browsers: Safari, Chrome, Firefox.
To sign out, open the Pulse Secure app again, then tap the Disconnect button to sign off. The next time you want to connect to the VPN, just open the app, tap Connect, and sign in with your eID and password. The other settings will be saved.
Android instructions:

- Install the Pulse Secure app from Google Play, or use this direct link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.juniper.junos.pulse.android&hl=en .
- Tap Accept at the bottom of the page to accept the terms and conditions of use.
- In the VPN tab on the next screen, tap the Add Connection button.
- Fill out the fields on the New Connection screen. (Note: These fields may be in a different order depending on the type of Android device you are using.)
- Connection Name - Name the VPN connection something useful, like JMU VPN.
- URL - Enter https://sslvpn.jmu.edu.
- Username - Enter your eID.
- Authentication - Enter your password.
- Realm - Leave this blank.
- Role- Leave this blank.
- Tap the Create Connection button.
- The JMU VPN should now appear under the Connections section. Tap the gray Connect button.
- Enter your eID and password. Tap Sign In.
- On some Android devices, you may be notified that Pulse Secure is trying to create a VPN connection. Select the box next to "I trust this application," then tap OK. It is ok if you do not see this message on your device.
- The VPN should now be connected. Look for these indicators:
- A Connected message appears in the Status bar in the app.
- There is now a Disconnect button in the VPN tab.
- A key icon may appear in the lower right corner of the screen (may not be available on all Android devices).
If these indicators are displayed, you can minimize the app and use a web browser on the device to access the library resources.
Recommended Android browsers: Chrome or Firefox.
To sign out, open the app and tap Disconnect. The next time you want to connect to the VPN, just open the app, tap Connect, and sign in with your eID and password. The other settings will be saved.
Windows Surface instructions
The Pulse Secure mobile app connects iOS and Android devices to JMU's SSL VPN service. This app is not officially supported by JMU Libraries or JMU IT. The following configuration information is provided for your convenience, should you choose to pursue this option on your own.
Set Up:
- Swipe in from the right and tap Settings.
- Select Change PC settings, select Network, select Connections.
- Under VPN, select Add a VPN connection.
- Under VPN provider, select Juniper Networks Pulse Secure.
- Name your connection something appropriate (JMU VPN, maybe?).
- Under Server name or address, type in sslvpn.jmu.edu
- Select Save.
To connect:
- Swipe in from the right and select Settings.
- Select the wireless network icon.
- Select your VPN connection and choose Connect.
- Select your appropriate Realm and then touch Next.
- You will need to sign in as normal.
Some notes about being connected to the Pulse Secure VPN using a Windows Surface:
- The desktop version of IE seems to work best on Surface.
- If you access PDFs through Quick Search, they will not open in the EBSCO application meant for this. Instead, you will be given a choice to Open or Save the PDF.
