Carrier Library

Located near JMU’s historic Quad, Carrier Library is JMU’s largest library. Originally built in 1939, it reopened in August 2026 following a comprehensive renovation and expansion.

Spaces in Carrier

• 24-Hour Space: Located on the ground floor of the Stan and Rosemary Jones Wing, Carrier’s 24-Hour Space features study space, vending machines, and restrooms. When the library is otherwise closed, JMU users may swipe their JACard to enter.
• Open study spaces and/or reading rooms can be found on all four of Carrier’s four floors.
• Grand Reading Room: Located on the third floor.
• Group study rooms: First-come first-served group study rooms are available. Additionally, selected group study rooms may be reserved by JMU faculty, students, and staff. Visit Group Study Rooms to learn more.
• Anatomy Room: The Thomas Family Anatomy Lab in Carrier Library provides space for multiple students to work with various anatomical models. Find it on the first floor between the South Entrance and the Ask the Library desk.
• Audio/Video Studios: Located on the second floor.
• Book Lab: Located on the second floor.
• Lactation Room: Located on the first floor.
• Library Futures Classroom: Located on the second floor.
• Relaxation Room: Located on the third floor.
• The Makery: Located on the second floor.
• Universal restrooms: One single-occupancy restroom is available on each floor.
• Vending areas: Carrier’s vending areas are on the ground floor and first floor.

Technology in Carrier

• Accessible Technology Lab: Located on the first floor near the South Entrance.
• Equipment Loans: Located at the Learning Innovations & Design Desk on the second floor.
• Laptop Loans: Located at the Learning Innovations & Design Desk on the second floor.
• The Makery: Located on the second floor.
• Computers: Located on the first floor. JMU users can log in with their e-ID. For guest login access, visit the Ask the Library desk and present a photo ID.
• Microform Machines (or Microform Readers): Our machines for viewing microforms are on the first floor.
• Printers & scanning: Carrier’s printers and scanners are located on the first floor.

Visitor Information

• Everyone is welcome to visit the JMU Libraries and access many of our collections, spaces, and services while in library buildings. All visitors are expected to follow the JMU Libraries Conduct Policy.

• Carrier Library is home to our books and journals on the arts, humanities, and literature. Books on the social sciences are available in either Carrier Library or Rose Library. Specifically, Carrier offers these collections:

• Ask the Library Desk: Located on the first floor. The Ask the Library desk is a great starting point for any question you may have about library spaces or services. This is also where you can check out and return library materials.

• Learning Innovations & Design Desk: Located on the second floor. The Learning Innovations & Design Desk is your source for educational technology and instructional design expertise at JMU – both in the classroom and online.
